  • About Us History

The Washington Times-Herald has strong community roots dating back to 1863 when the Washington Democrat was founded. The Washington Herald was founded in 1905 with the merger of two weekly newspapers. This daily also published a weekly Gazette for a few years. Because of political repercussions, the name Democrat was changed to the Daily Times in 1955.

On June 1, 1964, the long-standing family owned newspapers were merged to become the Washington Times-Herald. This ended a period when two dailies operated in a city of approximately 11,000.

The combined family operation, where one family oversaw the news and the other handled business, was ended with the purchase of the Times-Herald on Nov. 1, 1972, by the Donrey Media Group.

Community Newspapers Holdings Inc. purchased the Times-Herald in September 1998.
