Martin County down two sheriff's cruisers

SHOALS — Martin County Sheriff Tony Dant told the county council Monday that two of his eight cars are in the shop and requiring service.

One, a 2005 with 70,000 miles, needs a new transmission, estimated at costing $4,016. That price includes a warranty on the transmission. The other, a 2003 with 108,000 miles, needs work done to the whole front end, Dant said.

“He (the mechanic) said he thought we would be safe with $1,500,” Dant said referring to the estimated cost to fix the second vehicle.

Dant said there is still $3,500 in his budget for car maintenance, but it would be depleted after this fix and would require a little more from the council. Currently, there are two deputies using the same vehicle working on different shifts.

“Get them going one way or another and come back and see us,” Council president Richard Summers said.
