S. Indiana angler hooks state record bowfin

SEYMOUR, Ind. (AP) — State wildlife officials say a 16 1/2-pound bowfin hooked last year by a southern Indiana man set a new state record for the fish species.

The Department of Natural Resources says Paul Huber of Seymour caught a 32.25-inch bowfin in Jackson County’s Mutton Creek that tipped the scales at 16.52 lbs.

His catch broke the previous state bowfin record — a 16-pound fish caught in 1988.

The DNR says it got 54 entries for the 2009 Fish-of-the-Year, of which 27 were accepted.

The smallest was a 12-inch bluegill caught in Crystal Lake in northern Indiana’s Kosciusko County. The largest was a 50-inch muskie caught in Big Barbee Lake, also in Kosciusko County.
