Property tax deduction applications due

PUBLIC NOTICE

October 7, 2008

Applications for Property Tax Deductions will be accepted through December 31, 2008 in the Daviess County Auditor’s office for the year 2008, payable 2009 reduction of taxes.

Deductions result in lower tax bills; however, taxpayers must have the proper form on file with the County Auditor. It is the taxpayers responsibility to file and maintain their Property Tax Decuctions.

Those eligible for deductions include people who qualify for Homestead, Mortgage or Recorded Contract, Disabled Veterans and their surviving spouses, individuals ove 65, and blind or disabled people. There are also deductions for solar energy heating/cooling systems, wind power devices, hydroelectric power devices and geothermal energy heating/cooling devices. Certain additional qualifications may apply.

People who have refinanced mortgages may be unaware that they need to file new forms. People who have filed since 1982 for any of the real estate or personal property tax deductions listed above need not file again unless property ownership or their status has changed.

Those unsure whether they have a valid deduction on file should call the Auditor’s office at 254-8662 or visit the Auditor’s office in the Daviess County Court-house Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
