Hatchets earn tough win at invitational

FORT WAYNE — Washington boys soccer coach Quintin Myers wanted his team to prove they could play with top flight competition and he thought they did more than enough to show that this in Fort Wayne.

The Hatchets (8-2-4) went 1-1 during the Fort Wayne Invitational Saturday.

In Saturday’s opener, Washington defeated Class 2A No. 10 Fort Wayne Homestead 2-0.

Cullen Arnold put the Hatchets on the board with an early goal in the 11th minute. Junior Austin Ghirardelli added an unassisted goal in the 74th minute for the two-goal victory.

Goalie Tyler Seibert earned a shutout, stopping all four shots that he faced.  Myers said he was very pleased with the effort his team showed in thier first contest of the day.

“We’ve been asking all year for them to come out and play with all they have and step up, which they definitely did,” Myers said. “It was the best they’ve played all year. We talked before the game about the main goal of coming up here to Fort Wayne is to improve our game regardless of the outcome. When we came out with the result of 2-0 over the No. 10 team in the state, I couldn’t be happier.”

In the Hatchets second game of the day, the Hatchets were shutout 2-0 to Class 2A No. 5 Valparaiso.

The Viking’s scored only 88 seconds into the game to open up a one-goal lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

Valparaiso added their second and final goal in the 31st minute. Seibert managed three saves, while allowing the two goals.

The loss to Valparaiso didn’t muddle Myers’ opinion of how his team played. In fact, the loss only went further to prove to Myers that his team has turned the corner from their struggles earlier this season.

“This weekend they stepped up and played to the level where we’ve seen them play,” Myers said. “It was our second game within four hours and their first game of the day. We are going agains the fifth-ranked team in the state and it’s our second game with a 2-0 loss, I’ll take them any day on fresh legs. I feel we can play with anyone.”

Washington’s road trip continues Thursday with a Big Eight Conference  match with Jasper.
