The preliminary coroner’s report has been released in the police shooting death of Washington resident Stephen Todd Lee.
According to the report, Lee died of a “gunshot wound with penetration of right lung, superior vena cava and ribs.” It reported the manner of death as suicide by police.
Forensic pathologist Dr. James Jacobi performed the autopsy at 4 p.m. Monday at Lee’s Funeral Home.
Early Monday morning, the Washington City Police Department responded to a 911 report of a possible domestic situation at 2006 Grand Ave.
According to a press release, Lee, 42, was in the back yard of his father’s home with a camouflaged muzzle loading rifle. When officers ordered him to drop the gun, Lee fired, causing officers to return fire. He was pronounced dead at Daviess Community Hospital.
State police spokesman Sgt. Chad Dick said Thursday that detectives have concluded their investigation of the case and released the information to the Daviess County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
He said the case will most likely be heard by a grand jury to clear the officers.
Prosecutor Byron Overton and his chief deputy, Dan Murrie, were unavailable for comment Thursday.
The three Washington officers involved in the shooting, Sgt. Ritchie Tolliver, Sgt. Steve Mize and Patrolman Craig Cox, were placed on paid leave until the investigation was complete. They met with a counselor and have now returned to duty, according to police Chief Steve Riney.
