LOOGOOTEE — Mayor Don Bowling told the city council Monday a meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the 4-H building to hear public comments about the proposed Interstate 69 comprehensive land use plan.
The mayor said all 1,382 city water customers received a questionnaire about the land use plan, with about 25 percent responding. The results were compiled by the engineering firm of Bernandin, Lochmueller & Associates, who are being paid $50,000 through an INDOT grant to write the proposed plan for the city. A land use plan will also be written for Martin County by the same firm, which will be paid another $50,000.
Once a proposed plan for Loogootee is written, it will be submitted to the city council for consideration, which will include an additional public hearing.
“There is nothing about this plan that says we have to do anything,” Bowling said.
Although a committee consisting of several business and community leaders, as well as Councilwoman Susan Brewer and Bowling, have been meeting for several months on the matter, the mayor said no decisions have yet been made.
“No doubt some ideas in this plan will be controversial,” Bowling said, mentioning that it may lead to city zoning.

One bill of local interest that has passed through the House is HB 1149, the smoking ban. It would prohibit smoking in public places, enclosed places of employment and within 12 feet of a public entrance to those places. It also would prohibit smoking in certain state vehicles if signed into law. -
