Odon teen suffers burns

ODON — An Odon teen is in the burn unit at Riley’s Children hospital in Indianapolis after being burned while working on a car Tuesday night in Odon.

Tyson Craig, 16, was working on the engine of a demolition car owned by Gene Vosters, according to a family friend. Vosters and Isaiah Swartzentruber were seated inside the car while Craig was pouring gasoline in the carburetor, according to the friend, when apparently a fire broke out. Craig suffered burns along his arms, according to the friend.

Messages left at Swartzentruber’s and Vosters’ residences were not returned.

A dispatcher with the sheriff’s department said they had no record of a call or accident report but had received calls asking about the incident.

An employee of Southwest Medical said she was aware of the accident but Southwest did not transport Craig and that he was transported by a private vehicle from the accident scene.

A burn unit nurse at Riley said she couldn’t release Craig’s condition and messages left with the hospital’s media relations department were unreturned.

Craig’s family has requested that no visits or phone calls be made to them while they focus on Craig’s recovery.

Craig will turn 17 Monday and will be a junior at North Daviess High School in the fall.
