MONTGOMERY — The retirement of long-time teacher Donna Keller was announced at the Barr-Reeve school board meeting on Monday evening. Keller, retiring after 39 years, spent two years as a third-grade teacher, the remainder of her tenure in Title I at the primary.
Her retirement announcement was met with expressions of gratitude for her faithful service and well wishes for her retirement years from Superintendent Travis Madison, as well as board members Galen Graber, Joe Cummings and Scott Lottes.
Lottes added, “You have been a good example for the incoming teachers and your years of service mean a lot. We wish you the best.”
Keller is seeing her third generation of students pass through the halls of Barr-Reeve Primary. She now looks forward to spending more time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In other business, numerous professional development requests were approved for Chastity Sward, Jeff Doyle, Beth Ann Devillez, Mary Lottes, Tamara Swartzentruber and Annetta Graber.
Field trips being approved were for the high school chorus to the Southwest Indiana Choral Festival held at North Daviess High School. The band students, under the direction of Stephanie O’Brian were approved for a trip to an Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra concert. The high school band also will be traveling to Chicago in May 2013.
The middle and high school Spell Bowl teams will be competing in the Blue Chip Spell Bowl meet at Washington Catholic, as well as at North Knox High School for the state meet.
Yearbook ad sales day for the seniors will be Oct. 19.
In personnel, following the announcement of Keller’s retirement, a motion was made to hire Cheryl Graber, LPN, as an assistant to Mandy Ash, the school nurse. Graber will be paid an hourly wage, but will not receive benefits. Madison explained that while some details remain to be worked out, this will allow a nurse to be stationed at each building.
“There are some students in the Primary (building) requiring some attention and, with this, our parents can have the peace of mind of knowing that we have our bases covered,” he said.
The boys basketball coaches were approved as follows: varsity, Bryan Hughes; junior varsity, Craig Weisman; varsity assistant, Dean Scott; freshmen, Sam Gines; eighth grade, Mike DeCoursey; seventh grade, Josh Swartzentruber; and junior high volunteers Dave Kavanaugh, Amber DeCoursey and Kraig Knepp; sixth grade, Dwayne Murphy; fifth grade, Alex Knepp; and elementary volunteers Albert Kavanaugh and Tyson Wagler.
Fall break for B-R students will be Friday and Monday. The first grading period ends today, so parents can expect report cards by next week.

Farmers feeling crunch of wet planting season
Area farmers are feeling the crunch to get crops into the ground as soon as possible. Wet conditions have halted many of the planting days in the last week. Just five days were suitable for planting as the soil remains too wet in much of the southern portion of the state.

Seh Reh, like many who has come to Washington as a Burmese refugee, found life in his new home daunting. The language was so intimidating that he dropped out of high school in 2010.

North Daviess still facing budget cuts
