City gets another I-69 grant

WASHINGTON — Washington Mayor Larry Haag announced Wednesday an additional $846,833 grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation to build the new U.S. 50/Business 50 interchange in preparation for I-69. These monies are in addition to the $2.03 million the city and county received last month for the project.

“Once again I want to thank Gov. Daniels and INDOT for the support they have given to the city of Washington,” Haag said. “We continue to work in a bipartisan way to get things done here in Washington and Daviess County. And it is important that I-69 is a growth opportunity not only for new businesses, but also for our existing businesses right here in Daviess County.”

The city had originally requested $2.88 million in grant monies and this new grant completes the funding for the project, Haag said. With the completion of the funding for the interchange the timeline for its design and construction will be able to move forward, he added.

City and county monies will be used as a match for what will be a new “entrance into Washington,” Haag said.

Daniels said during a June news conference, “Thousands of construction workers are at work today and have been for the last five years, in a record-building boom in our state. Those are not even the most important jobs. The most important jobs are those that . . . will come and are coming to Indiana because the ‘Crossroads of America’ got serious about infrastructure.”

Ron Arnold, executive director Daviess County Economic Development Corporation, is equally encouraged by this announcement.

“I always told my kids that good things happen when you work hard,” Arnold said. “There have been a lot of people working hard on this project and good things are continuing to happen.”

INDOT projects the completion of the Daviess County portion of I-69 by the end of 2012.

School board approves new handbooks
Members of the Washington Community Schools Board approved the 2013- 2014 school handbooks. Elementary, junior high and high school student handbooks will now be more streamlined with one another. One major change to the handbooks will be a stricter attendance policy for students. Currently, students in the school district can have 10 unexcused absences per semester.

Road paving in Washington

The Indiana Department of Transportation is advising motorists to be aware of temporary lane restrictions on Bus. 50 in Washington. Beginning on or after Monday, May 20, crews will be spot paving throughout the city. Work will be accomplished one lane at a time and utilize flag persons to control traffic through the work zones. Work activities are scheduled to take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day with all paving operations anticipated to be complete by May 24. Inclement weather will cancel the work operation for the day.

2:19 p.m. - Dave Waters, 200 1/2 SE 7th St., reported that someone had broken into his storage building and broke the windows out of the vehicles stored there. Waters also said that someone had smashed in the roofs on many of the vehicles. Extra patrol was requested.
