WASHINGTON —
Daviess County Superior Court Judge Dean A. Sobecki on Monday sentenced Larry A. Tressel, 40, of Washington, to 45 years with the Indiana Department of Correction. Twelve of those years were suspended and 33 are to be executed.
Tressel pleaded guilty on May 15 to attempt to commit murder in the case brought by the state after he stabbed his then 32-year-old wife Tabatha on Sept. 23, 2010. The two had been in a dispute about Larry selling Tabatha’s DVDs for beer money prior to an altercation in the yard of the couple’s apartment building at 804 E. Main St., where neighbors found her bleeding from two stab wounds to the chest.
Larry fled the scene and was apprehended a short time later by Washington Police officers. He’s been held at Daviess County Security Center on $1 million bond.
Attempted murder is a Class A felony, which carries a presumptive sentence of 30 years, but the judge may add up to 20 years for aggravating circumstances or subtract as much as 10 years for mitigating circumstances. The probable cause affidavit in the stabbing case stated Larry had stabbed Tabatha in the leg another time, but the incident had never been reported; that he had stabbed a man in a bar one time; and that he once had attempted to shoot his mother with a bow and arrow. During interrogation, Larry admitted to the incidents, according to the affidavit. In addition, at the time of his arrest, he was wanted on three outstanding warrants.
At the sentencing hearing, Larry said he was sorry, but Tabatha, who survived her injuries, read a statement making it clear she didn’t believe him.
“A plea and a sentence like this is a credit to the outstanding work of the Washington Police Department,” said Daviess County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Murrie. I hope the victim can move on after this tragic event in her life.”
