EVANSVILLE — The Lady Hatchet basketball team was defeated by Evansville Harrison team 68-57 on Tuesday.
Washington (8-10) trailed 39-24 at half, but battled back hard the second half, outscoring the Lady Warriors 33-29, but it wasn’t enough to catch Evansville Harrison (11-8). Leading the way for the Hatchets was Olivia Lengacher with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Olivia Brashear added 14 points including four three-pointers. Chelsey Hedrick tallied nine points and 10 rebounds, followed by Payton Shake with eight points, Claire Hatton with five points, and Jenna Stoll had four points.
“During the first half we felt that we were not controlling the aspects of the game that we could. Our rebounding was very poor and containing the dribble was nonexistent. After halftime the girls really battled back in the second half for 16 hard minutes,” said Washington coach Gretchen Miles.
“They did a nice job of not making turnovers off of Harrison’s press and Hedrick and Lengacher did a nice job of sprinting the floor for easy lay-ups. We did not take advantage of our offensive putbacks. With 17 offensive boards — we have to capitalize on all of them to stay with a team like Harrison. We work hard to crash the boards and the kids need to reward themselves by scoring it.
“Olivia Lengacher was due for a game like this. She did a nice job of making moves to the basket and finishing them. This is a performance we are going to need from her on Thursday and throughout tournament play. Madi Heacock did a nice job of handling the basketball for us. Her confidence with the ball is improving, and that helps out relieving some of that pressure off of Payton,” added Miles. “Chelsey Hedrick and Olivia Brashear had another solid performance in scoring and Hedrick with rebounds. Jenna Stoll came in off the bench and gave us productive minutes and scored for us.
“We are starting to see her playing more relaxed, and that is great to see this time of year. Payton and Claire had the difficult defensive assignment on Hart and Robinson, and they were expected to handle the ball and score for us,” said Miles.
“They both worked extremely hard on both ends of the floors and created a lot of our offensive looks.”
In the JV game, the Lady Hatchets won 37-35. Audra Lane and Jerrica Perkins led the WHS with 10 points apiece.
ND girls fall at Sullivan
SULLIVAN — The North Daviess Lady Cougars traveled to Sullivan on Tuesday night and were defeated by the host Golden Arrows 52-39. Jenny Dove lead all scoring with 21 points, followed by Stephanie Summers with 11.
The Cougars again played with a lot of determination after falling behind early in the game. North Daviess rallied in the fourth quarter to get the game within 10 points with four minutes remaining. The Cougars took a timeout with the score 39-29 to make one final run. However Sullivan (5-14) came out and was able to go on a small run of its own to keep North Daviess (11-9) at that 10-point margin.
“I really thought the girls played well at times tonight. We just seem to have two or three minute stretches where we have a lapse. I am however extremely pleased about where we are as a team at this time of the season,” said North Daviess coach Ron Knepp. “This team has been able to gain valuable experience and everyone is contributing to the best of their ability. When you have a group of girls that are willing to give their very best no matter what the score, you can build on that type of effort.
“Jenny Dove and Steph Summers really stepped up tonight and played a very good all around game. I thought Janae Wagler did a great job controlling the post on the defensive end tonight,” added Knepp. “Janae has battled illness all year and continues to come out on game night and contribute.
“Larynda Keith again did a good job running the point. Larynda was able to split the trapping defenses tonight and give us good scoring opportunities. Another bright spot for us was the play of J’Lynn Borter. J’Lynn was able to come into the game and provide great play that allowed us to not only hold Sullivan to a four-point third quarter, but we were able to go on a run and close the game to within 10 in the middle of the fourth quarter.”
Also, scoring for North Daviess were Jolynn O’Haver, Janae Wagler, and Gracie Meyer all had two points each, and Ashley Troutman with one. North Daviess will be at home tonight for Senior Night with Eastern.
Lady Lions down Eastern
BLOOMFIELD — Loogootee got a big game from Tia Pennington in downing Eastern Greene 46-34 on Tuesday.
Pennington led all scorers with 20 points for Loogootee (12-7). She was joined in double figures by Kelci Mann with 10 points. Taylor Walker hit a pair of 3-pointers on the way to eight points for the Lady Lions, who led 11-4 after one quarter and 24-12 at the half. Wynter Wagoner scored four points for LHS, followed by three points from Waynessa Burch and a point from Brooke Nonte.
“This is a nice road win for us. Eastern is always a tough place to play,” said Loogootee coach Dave Smith. “The kids did a nice job tonight of taking care of business on the road.”
B-R 7th boys still perfect
The Barr-Reeve seventh grade basketball team improved to 18-0 with a 47-19 victory over South Knox on Tuesday night. The Vikings led 14-4 after one quarter, 28-6 at halftime, and 37-8 after the third quarter. The Vikings were led by Addison Wagler’s 19 points. He was followed by Jeremy Graber and Chris Wittmer with six points each.
Matt Stoll, Connor Swartzentruber, and Josh Graber each added four points. Seth Swartzentruber and Ethan Duncheon rounded out the Viking scoring with two points each.
