The United Way of Daviess County received a matching grant of $44,835 toward its 2009 Annual United Way Campaign goal and is accepting project proposals for the distribution of the funds.

Support from Lilly Endowment created this opportunity for the local United Way to have access to some of the $8 million available and to collaborate with community partners/contributors.

“We are very excited to be able to use these grant funds to support projects in the areas of financial stability, health and education. These are the building blocks for productive life in our community,” said Blakely Clements, executive director for the United Way of Daviess County.

United Way works with many organizations within the community to generate resources and address community issues, and 4community2, a United Way grant, is another way to be able to enhance and impact Daviess County.

“4community2 builds on the success of previous grant programs and provides us with an opportunity to connect annual campaigns and to collaborative community initiatives. We are asking prospective not-for-profits (with a 501(c)3 or equivalent) to bring proposals to the 4C2 Committee,” said local 4Community2 Committee chairperson Wendy Bouvier.

Clements said the match was made through increased giving from individuals and corporations and new donors.

“It was amazing to see contributors call and ask about the three areas of community work, and how they would like to help enhance Daviess County through education, health and financial stability,” said John Britton the 2009 Annual Campaign Chair.

If any organization would like to apply for these funds with projects relating to health, financial stability or education, contact the United Way Office.

All proposals must be turned in by March 20, and include the following: Proposal with project description, area of enhancement, actual costs of entire project (budget breakdown), timeline (funding can be used for two years), number of individuals to serve, age of population to serve, areas to serve (i.e. Odon, Cannelburg, Washington, etc.), measurements for success, and most importantly, outcomes that will show enhancement to lives in Daviess County. Send two copies to the United Way of Daviess County c/o 4Community2, P.O. Box 224 Washington, IN 47501. All funds must be used for projects by not-for-profits and only be used in Daviess County.

The committee, consisting of seven community leaders, will review all proposals. They are actively looking for community-focused projects as well in areas of health, financial stability and-or education. Call Clements at 254-1038 for more details.

“We want everyone to be a part of advancing the common good in our community through being a volunteer, giving back in your own way or advancing the message of the necessity for human service needs in Daviess County,” Clements said.

2011 graduation rates announced
Data released by the Indiana Department of Education Tuesday shows graduation rates statewide increased 1.9 percent over last year and 4.3 percent over the 2009 rate to 85.7 percent; in total, 80 percent of graduates received a Core40 or Honors diploma, the most in Indiana’s history.

Petersburg men arrested in truck wash armed robbery
An Indiana State Police investigation into the Jan. 29 armed robbery at Blue Beacon Truck Wash located near U.S. 41 and I-64 has prompted criminal charges being filed against Larry Nathaniel Davis, 26, and Branden Joe Walburn, 26, both from Petersburg. Felony warrants were issued yesterday afternoon for their arrests. At approximately 11:30 Tuesday night, Indiana State Police executed the warrants and arrested Davis and Walburn without incident.
