On a cold, rainy Wednesday, Washington Catholic students lined up on a charter bus, ready to spend the next 13 hours going to Washington D.C.

For the 49 students and chaperones, the ride is to support a cause they hold dear — life.

Washington Catholic is boasting one of the largest contingents in recent years to participate in today’s March For Life on the Mall in Washington D.C.

The students, along with several WC teachers and staff, will be marching in the forecasted rain against abortion. The school has been a part of the march since 1995 when six students took part.

After several quick goodbyes to parents, a couple photos and a quick prayer written by Sister Yvonne Evans, the students were off. They were to meet other students from Knox and Vanderburgh counties before making the long ride to the nation’s capital.

For freshman Steven Holland, 15, this is the first time he has been on the march. Holland, while waiting in line could only nod at times, waiting to get on the warm bus.

“It is neat getting to go with your friends,” Holland said.

The March for Life has been held each year since 1974 on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States. In recent years, the march on the Mall has attracted more than 200,000 marchers.

In addition to marching today, the students will get to see the federal government in action this weekend as trips are planned to the Supreme Court and Congress, according to David Carie, a Catholic Community of Washington employee and one of the chaperones on the trip.

Also planned are visits to several war memorials. The students will return Sunday morning.

2011 graduation rates announced
Data released by the Indiana Department of Education Tuesday shows graduation rates statewide increased 1.9 percent over last year and 4.3 percent over the 2009 rate to 85.7 percent; in total, 80 percent of graduates received a Core40 or Honors diploma, the most in Indiana’s history.

Petersburg men arrested in truck wash armed robbery
An Indiana State Police investigation into the Jan. 29 armed robbery at Blue Beacon Truck Wash located near U.S. 41 and I-64 has prompted criminal charges being filed against Larry Nathaniel Davis, 26, and Branden Joe Walburn, 26, both from Petersburg. Felony warrants were issued yesterday afternoon for their arrests. At approximately 11:30 Tuesday night, Indiana State Police executed the warrants and arrested Davis and Walburn without incident.
