Mark Messmer, Republican from Jasper, has announced that he will seek re-election for State Representative, District 63 in the Indiana General Assembly.
Messmer is completing his first term in office. He served on the Small Business and Economic Development Committee and the Financial Institutions Committee this session.
“It has been a great honor and privilege to serve the citizens of our district over the past year,” Messmer said.
Messmer said there is no better way to help shape the many critical issues facing the area and state than to be part of the Indiana General Assembly.
“A big concern of mine and of most people of our district has been the alarming rate of government spending with little regard for what the taxpayers can afford,” Messmer said. “I support legislation that looks to cut government spending first.
“Our state budget last year cut spending and did not raise taxes on Hoosiers. Property tax caps are there to protect the pocket book of taxpayers and limit what government can take from you and me.”
Messmer said that one of the most rewarding parts of being a state representative is being able to intervene for the people he serves when they have problems dealing with state agencies.
“Helping take care of the varied issues my constituents have contacted me about and being able to solve problems for them and make a difference in peoples lives is a real blessing,” Messmer said. “I take constituent services very seriously.
“I also appreciate that we have a part-time citizen legislature that allows me to remain active in my community. I have been able to stay involved in my family’s activities and continue to be involved as a music minister at my church. It is important that when we are not in Indianapolis that we stay in touch with our community as much as possible and continue to work at a normal job so we stay connected to everyday, real-life problems.”
Messmer has been married to his wife Kim for 24 years and they have four children, Eric, 22, Laura, 19, Madeline, 15, and Luke, 13. He is a 1981 graduate of Jasper High School. He graduated from Purdue University in May 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering.
He worked for Dow Chemical in Midland, Mich., from May 1985 through March 1986. He then joined the firm John Brown Engineering in Mt. Vernon, Ind., until June of 1988 when he moved back to Jasper to work in his family’s mechanical contracting business.
He became licensed as a professional engineer in 1990. He and his two brothers are now co-owners of Messmer Mechanical, Inc.
