Organizers will once again put together the 32nd Annual Daviess County Relief Sale on the third Saturday of August at the Simon J. Graber Complex, but this year, the sale will have a new starting time, 5 p.m.
The goal of the Daviess County Relief Sale is to raise funds for Christian Ministries Charities, Christian Aid Ministries and Mennonite Central Committee, who all help feed, support and minister to hungry people around the world.
Also, 10 percent of this year’s proceeds will be staying to help local organizations like the American Red Cross, Feed My Sheep and others that help those who are hungry or in need in the immediate area. In order to raise funds, organizers felt a later starting time would be beneficial.
“Several people in the community advised the committee that a late afternoon or evening start time would allow more people to attend the Relief Sale,” said Leroy Kemp, president of this year’s Relief Sale Committee. “We know many people have jobs or other commitments on Saturday mornings, so the later start time gives them an opportunity to support the sale.”
In the past the Relief Sale started with a morning breakfast and the auction at 9 a.m., but this year’s event on Saturday, Aug. 18 will not begin until 4 p.m. with the service of an evening meal and the auction at 5 p.m. The evening meal will consist of turkey, fish, baked beans, slaw and chips. Also, baked goods and ice cream will be available.
Although the start time may be new, the items for sale will be similar to the past.
One of the highlights of the sale is the hand-stitched quilts created by sewing circles in the community. Selling quilts has been a tradition at the auction since its inception in July 1981.
Last year 18 quality, full-size to queen size quilts were auctioned. Also, auctioned were 12 comforters and 16 baby blankets.
Other auction items expected include an antique-looking desk, curio cabinet, miscellaneous furniture items, toys, tools, gift certificates, household items and farm-related items.
Anyone is welcome to come and bid on the items, and anyone is welcome to donate new items to sell. Used items will not be sold this year. New sale items can be brought to the complex on Friday evening or Saturday morning. If one has questions about the sale, please contact Leroy Kemp at 486-3949 or Martin Raber at 486-2570.
While dropping off donated items for the auction, one can take in a few softball games and refreshments. This will be the third year for the men’s softball tourney at the complex diamonds. More than 17 teams are expected to participate. The tourney will begin Aug. 17 and continue into Aug. 18. Snacks, turkey and sausage sandwiches and drinks will be available Friday evening and Saturday throughout the day.

The Daviess County Relief Sale Committee is inviting the community to attend this special event and help them feed others around the world while spreading the gospel.
The committee has maintained its motto for the past three decades, which is I. John 3:17 “If anyone sees his brother in need and fails to help, ... what evidence is there of God’s love...?”

WHS wins SeaPerch title
Washington’s SeaPerch teams took home gold at last Saturday’s national competitions at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The WHS NJROTC STEM team won first overall out of 100 teams competing at the national finals. The NJROTC team took first in the obstacle course and the deep water transfer portions of the competition, and received special recognition in the technical innovation.

Washington man arrested on molestation charge
A Washington man was arrested Friday for one count of child molesting. Jacob Tyler Taylor, 19, 603 E. Main St., Apt. 3, was arrested by city police for a count of Class B felony child molesting.

Lyons gets 65 years
Dressed in a bright green jumpsuit and escorted by members of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, Corey Mitchell Lyons, 23, entered the court room, and sat hunched over a table with his family sitting behind. On the other side of the room sat family members of a baby who's was life was taken too soon and the mother of Lyons’ child Savanna Johnson.

Four Washington residents were arrested Friday night following a meth lab bust.
At 1:40 a.m. Friday, city officers noticed a smell near 902 W. Walnut St.

Fifteen committee chairmen from Washington Township will vote at 8:45 a.m. today to fill the position following the death of Albert “Pete” Showalter, who died on April 13. -
