Final board meeting for Hatton

WASHINGTON — The last official Washington Community Schools board meeting for Superintendent Bruce Hatton was short and bittersweet.

Board President Steve Frette presented Hatton, who retires at the end of the month, with a plaque recognizing his dedication and service to the corporation.

Hatton has spent 26 years with the corporation, beginning as an assistant principal in 1986, working as principal in various buildings, then as assistant superintendent and serving as superintendent the last six years.

“Time has gone by very quickly,” Hatton said after thanking the board. “I appreciate the opportunities I was given.”

He said working in Washington schools has been a rewarding experience. Hatton said he’s especially enjoyed seeing students graduate and become successful in their careers.

In other personnel issues, the board accepted a letter of retirement from technology director Dave Graf. Hatton requested permission to post the position internally.

“Todd Riker has taken over the reins for the summer,” he said.

The board also accepted the resignations of Shannon Strange as seventh-grade girls soccer coach, Cory Cooper as high school Project Lead The Way teacher, Scott (Jake) Durnil as high school assistant football coach, Jessie Davis as elementary teacher, and Levi Yowell as assistant high school principal.

Leah Ellis was appointed as junior high English teacher, Laura Schilling as high school Beta Club co-sponsor and Anthony Barnard as guidance department chair. Barnard, Yowell, Maria Killion, Larry Mattes and Cathy Stenftenagel were approved for summer school.

“Our summer school contracts each year are becoming less and less,” Hatton said.

Elementary school book and student fees were approved as follows: kindergarten, $85.50 and $10.50; first grade, $106.60 and $12.20; second grade, $93.85 and $12.20; third grade, $74.20 and $7.80; fourth grade, $68.90 and $7.80; fifth grade, $70.10 and $7.80; and sixth grade, $70.30 and $7.80.

Junior and senior high school fees will vary depending upon the student’s schedule.

In other business:

• Hatton reported 41 students were in secondary credit recovery classes, and 22 were in I-Read.

• A trust agreement between Washington Community Schools and the Southern Indiana School Trust was approved.

• An NJROTC request to attend Crane Science, Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Camp, July 24-27, was approved.

• The board approved a measure allowing them to recoup $49,000 the Department of Local Government Finance erroneously shorted the corporation.

• Hatton announced online registration for the upcoming school year will begin in mid-July. On-site registration for elementary and junior high school students will be July 31, noon to 3 p.m.; Aug. 1, 4-7 p.m., with seventh-grade parent orientation at 7:15 p.m. in the auditorium; and Aug. 2, 9 a.m. to noon. For high school students, on-site registration will be Aug. 6 for seniors, Aug. 7 for juniors, Aug. 8 for sophomores and Aug. 9 for freshmen. Times are 8 a.m. to noon each of those days.
