The Montgomery Ruritan Club will be hosting this year’s 41st annual Montgomery Turkey Trot Festival on its grounds Thursday through Sunday.
For the seventh year in a row, WAMW-FM’s Dewayne Shake will chair the event. And it may be his experience in the music industry that has helped to bring in the big names for the festival’s concerts, which this year will feature the Kentucky Headhunters on Friday and Casey James on Saturday.
“Good Times” DJ services will be in the beer garden at 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
With the number of live shows planned, the festival’s affordability is unbelievable. And if you are planning to go each night, the four day pass is definitely your best bet.
This year, the festival is starting a new tradition by hosting its first annual 5K Marathon sponsored by the Daviess Community Hospital and WAMW. The race will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Gastof Amish Country Hotel and will end at the Montgomery Ruritan Community Building with an awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Awards will be given for the male and female top finishers of each age group.
Packet pick-up and same day registration will be from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. at the Gastof Amish Country Hotel.
There will be carnival rides all four days, beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 11 a.m. Saturday; and noon Sunday. There will also be various food stands scattered throughout the grounds to conquer your hunger and thirst while enjoying the festival.
However, no Turkey Trot Festival is complete without its legendary turkey races, which are scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. Contestants are provided with a collared and leashed turkey to shoo over the finish line. Turkey race heats start at 6:30 p.m. Friday, semi-finals start at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and the championship race starts at 12:15 p.m. Sunday.
Other than the namesake turkeys, festival participants and patrons love anything involving mud. The first main event is mud volleyball at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the pit. Then at 1 p.m. Sunday, children will gather near the pit area for pig wrestling in the ankle-deep mud.
But not everyone enjoys getting dirty. Other festivities include bingo at the community building at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and a flea market and crafts starting at 5:00 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday and Sunday on the grounds. Also on Saturday there will be 3-point and freethrow shooting competition along with other challenge games all starting at 1:30 p.m.
Festival participants also have the opportunity to enjoy the Farm Stock Tractor Pulls that are set to begin on Thursday evening at 6:45 p.m. and the ITPA-Indiana Truck Pullers all classes event that will take place Saturday at 2 p.m.
The festival will conclude with the demolition derby on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Registration for the derby is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. A $25 entry fee is required at the time of entry. Along with the full-sized car derby, there will also be a mini-car demolition derby to be held between the last heat and feature of the full-sized car derby. Heat awards include 1st place and 2nd place trophies. Feature race awards include monetary prizes for first through third places.
The festival is really a great opportunity for the community to come together and really get to know each other. And community support is very important as the Ruritan Club returns any profits from the festival back to the community through charitable donations and improvements to the park.

Wrestlers for relay
The Team Todd Relay for Life team will be joining with Tri-State Wrestling to bring an event to the Old Petersburg Gym on Saturday. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with bell time at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 and children under 4 are free. All proceeds from the event go to the Daviess County Relay for Life Team Todd.

Dollar General focuses on reading
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced an award of $7,800 to the Washington Carnegie Public Library to support the new adult literacy program being now being offered.

Letters returned after 55 years
Fifty-five years ago Jerry Decker wrote letters back home to his sweetheart, Carol, from Camp Pendleton, California where he was based in the Marine Corps. Fifty-five years later, Jerry still had his letters from Carol. But Carol, now Jerry¹s wife of 52 years, had, well misplaced a few of hers.

Shoals graduation set
Commencement exercises will be held in the gymnasium of the Shoals Junior-Senior High School at 2 p.m. Saturday for 36 candidates for graduation. The Junior-Senior High School Band, under the direction of Joel Weitkamp, will open the commencement program with the processional, followed by the national anthem.

WC to graduate on Friday
Washington Catholic High School will hold its commencement exercises at 8 p.m. Friday in the gymnasium. Following the procession and invocation, Karie Craney, principal, will make introductory remarks. The salutatory addresses by Hannah Emmons and Steven Holland will follow a musical selection by the WC Ensemble. The valedictory address will then be given by Andrea Onyett. Daryl Hagan, superintendent of Catholic Schools Diocese of Evansville, and Andrew Wibbeler, dean of students, will present graduate scholarships. Bishop Charles C. Thompson, Diocese of Evansville, Daryl Hagan and Karie Craney will then present the diplomas.
