WASHINGTON —
Daviess/Martin County Right to Life, the largest political group in both counties, held its annual dinner at the Simon J. Graber Community Building on Thursday. The dinner was especially politically charged this year as voters will decide on candidates that will make major decisions in the fight against abortion.
Both major candidates for in the 8th District congressional race, Republican Larry Bucshon and Democrat Dave Crooks, were in attendance during the dinner. Bucshon was invited to speak during the dinner and Crooks met and spoke with voters at the door.
While both candidates have good pro-life voting records, Bucshon was given the nomination by the Indiana Right to Life PAC, as were Republicans in the Indiana Senate, governor and state representative races. State Reps.Matt Uebelhor and Bruce Borders were in attendance.
Bucshon said being a pro-life supporter is personally important to him.
“I have a 100 percent pro-life voting record,” Bucshon said. “You can count on me keeping that promise.”
Crooks, campaigning in his home county, said a few words.
“As a state representative, I co-authored the partial birth abortion ban that was signed into law,” Crooks said. “I’m proud of my pro-life record and it was a privilege to attend tonight’s banquet.”
Daviess/Martin RTL President Louis Kavanaugh said voting for pro-life candidates was very important especially since there is a Presidential election, and the national impact on judge selection and abortion legislation.
“That’s what got (Sen. Richard) Lugar in trouble because he voted for too many pro-abortion judges,” Kavanaugh said.
But politics was one small segment of the pro-adoption, pro-life message of Thursday night. Keynote speaker Jennifer Polimino knows that message firsthand. Coming from a childhood of abuse and bad decisions, Polimino had an abortion at age 16. She regretted it ever since.
“If there was one person that told me I didn’t have to go through with it, I would have bolted out that door,” Polimino said.
Through prayer and counseling, she got her life back on track and later founded a pro-mother website, www.prayforyourbaby.com . She is also a syndicated health columnist and speaker.
The Omer family was also honored Thursday. Four years ago, Drs Jason Omer and Leslie Starr-Omer adopted Brynna in 2008. Leslie gave a moving story about how Brynna came into their lives. Brynna and the family was featured on the cover of this year’s Right to Life book.
“People always say how she looks like one of us. It shows how God has played a role in our lives,” Leslie said.There wasn’t a Right to Life presentation this year, because it was given the day before. Edward Allen McAtee, a longtime volunteer from Martin County, was given the award at a ceremony earlier because he was running the sound booth during the dinner.

1:03 a.m. - Karen Hulsey, of 511 S. Meridian St. reported a subject possibly hiding the bushes behind her residence. She stated she didn’t see anyone, but could hear coughing. -
School board approves new handbooks
Members of the Washington Community Schools Board approved the 2013- 2014 school handbooks. Elementary, junior high and high school student handbooks will now be more streamlined with one another. One major change to the handbooks will be a stricter attendance policy for students. Currently, students in the school district can have 10 unexcused absences per semester.

Unchained Gang roars into park
The Daviess County Unchained Gang will be hosting its 11th annual motorcycle show and swap meet Saturday at Eastside Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

DECA to sponsor dodgeball tourney
Members of the Washington High School DECA Chapter will be hosting a DECA Dodgeball Tournament on Tuesday in the Hatchet House beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Road paving in Washington
The Indiana Department of Transportation is advising motorists to be aware of temporary lane restrictions on Bus. 50 in Washington. Beginning on or after Monday, May 20, crews will be spot paving throughout the city. Work will be accomplished one lane at a time and utilize flag persons to control traffic through the work zones. Work activities are scheduled to take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day with all paving operations anticipated to be complete by May 24. Inclement weather will cancel the work operation for the day.

2:19 p.m. - Dave Waters, 200 1/2 SE 7th St., reported that someone had broken into his storage building and broke the windows out of the vehicles stored there. Waters also said that someone had smashed in the roofs on many of the vehicles. Extra patrol was requested. -
U.S. 50 Yard Sale starts Friday
Daviess County will be participating in the 13th annual “Great U.S. 50 Yard Sale” Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is the third year Daviess County has participated.

Barr-Reeve celebrates vote, Four-Star status
Barr-Reeve Middle/High School has been named a 2011-2012 Indiana Four Star School by the Indiana Department of Education. In order for a school to be eligible for the honor, the school must be in the 25th percentile of schools in ISTEP testing results. Over 300 schools across the state received the honor. Barr-Reeve was the only Daviess County School to make the cut.
