Have 'wine' time in Washington Friday night

WASHINGTON — Ease into the holiday weekend at A Wine, Cheese and Art Festival in downtown Washington’s Meredith Plaza Friday night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Elke Guratzsch, executive assistant at the chamber, said Windy Knoll Winery from Vincennes and Kapp Winery from Ireland will be represented at the festival. Cheeses will be from Graham Cheese.

“To get into the wine tasting area, it’s $10, and you get a glass and eight tickets,” Guratzsch said, explaining that the glass commemorates the event and the tickets are used for the tastings.

Festival-goers can relax and enjoy live entertainment while sampling the wine. Guratzsch said a mix of musical entertainment will be provided by State Representative Mark Messmer and son; Keinon Delph, this year’s talent show winner; Conrad Knepp, a Barr-Reeve graduate with a new recording contract; and local favorite Rocky Rhoads. There also will be antique cars and artwork of various types on display. Guratzsch said artists will exhibit and sell a variety of items, including paintings, photography and jewelry.

“Wine will be for sale by the glass and by the bottle,” she added.

Second Street will be blocked off to create a play area for children, where YMCA lifeguards have volunteered to babysit. Guratzsch said they’ll play games with the kids while their parents participate in the wine tasting.

“If you purchase tickets to get into the wine tasting area, child care is free,” she said. “The children will still be in view of their parents but will be occupied by babysitters. We have several little games to keep them busy.”

This is the second year for the festival, which is hosted by the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce.  According to Charles Selby, chamber director, proceeds from the event help support projects throughout the county. He said Meredith Plaza is one of those projects. An upcoming project is street lights for the town of Odon.
