WASHINGTON —
Jarret D. Whitehead, 25, of Washington, was injured after crashing the vehicle he was driving while fleeing from police early Thursday morning.
The incident occurred around 12:47 a.m. on CR 150W near CR 300N. A preliminary investigation of the accident by Indiana State Police revealed Washington Patrolman Brandon Humphries was pursuing Whitehead, who was driving a white 1995 Cadillac Deville.
According to a press release from the Washington Police Department, Humphries was at Shell Mart at 12:42 a.m. and observed Whitehead pump gas into his vehicle and start to leave without paying. Humphries ran outside and yelled “Police! Stop!” but Whitehead continued out of the parking lot at a high rate of speed. Humphries got into his personal vehicle, turned on his red and blue lights and gave chase.
An ISP news release states Whitehead was northbound on CR 150W and lost control of the Cadillac as he attempted to turn east onto CR 300N. The car slid sideways and struck an embankment on the north side of the road.
Whitehead was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Daviess Community Hospital and then airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, where he was reported to be in good condition Thursday afternoon.
Charges are pending for theft, resisting law enforcement in a vehicle/fleeing, driving while suspended prior, reckless driving and criminal recklessness.
The Cadillac sustained approximately $2,500 in damage.
