PLAINVILLE —
For the sixth year, students can end the summer in style as Plainville Park plays host to the Plainville Back to School Bash from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Close to 500 children will enjoy games, inflatables, a dunking booth, prizes and other features for free. Sheila Willis, one of the organizers, said the group wanted to keep it free.
“We wanted to remove the economic factors that so often creates barriers between neighbors and give parents a venue in which they can say ‘yes’ to their kids without worrying about what they should be spending the money on,” Willis said.
New to this year will be pony rides that are also donated. Locals and businesses donate funds for the bash and the Plainville Town Board also gives for the effort, helping pay for and serve free food for the festival.
“The unbelievable support and donations from area businesses and residents has made it a continued success,” Willis said. “In fact, we want to encourage everyone to shop local when able because these folks have been more than generous with us and so many others in our communities and it would be great if we could reciprocate.”
The event started six years ago when Willis and a group of her neighbors wanted to hold a block party on the Fourth of July. Because of a short turnaround time, the group decided to go for the back to school theme.
That first year, 90 children from grades K-12 attended in their neighborhood.
By the third year, the event had grown so large it needed a larger home at Plainville Park.
Winners during the games will get tickets that can later be exchanged for prizes, or put into drawings for bigger prizes. At around 7:30 p.m., the drawings will be held for three bicycles and donated prizes.
Locally-based Wacky the Clown will be performing a magic show at 6 p.m. He will stick around to make balloon animals afterward.
Bingo will be offered and prizes for those that are young at heart. According to Willis, there are rumors there will be some prizes for adults this year.
