Soil and Water offering cover crop program

MONTGOMERY — The Daviess County Soil and Water Conservation District is promoting the power of cover crops to enhance soil health for the benefit of cash crops and the environment.

According to DCSWCD livestock and conservation technician Kevin Allison, cover crops can benefit farmers by cutting fertilizer costs, enhancing soil health and conserving moisture. Cover crops also help the environment by reducing soil erosion, improving water filtration rates, scavenging nutrients and increasing soil organic matter. The nutrient and sediment load in streams is reduced, Allison said, addressing community health and ecological concerns.

DCSWCD material states annual ryegrass is an outstanding organic matter addition to soil that suppresses weeds; tillage-type radish alleviates soil compaction; and turnips are good for grazing. Crimson clover provides good soil erosion prevention and is an excellent soil builder; cereal rye is a good nutrient scavenger and provides winter-long erosion protection.

Nutrient scavengers may come in handy for fields this year. Allison said drought conditions kept corn from growing to maturity, so it didn’t use nutrients from fertilizer that was applied earlier in the season.

Farmers interested in planting a cover crop are invited to apply for a cost-share cover crop program offered by DCSWCD. The program will help pay a portion of the seed expenses incurred by those individuals selected. Farmers accepted into the program can collect $20 per acre for up to 50 acres of seed expense.

Three cover crop mixes are available as part of the program, depending upon the individual grower’s needs. The “erosion control” mix consists of crimson clover and annual ryegrass. The “soil buster” is made up of Austrian winter peas and tillage radish. The “forage” mix contains cereal rye, oats and turnips.

Applications are being accepted through Aug. 17 online at daviesscoswcd.org or in person at the SWCD office, 2526 E. Nat’l Hwy. Program funds are limited, so applications will be prioritized based on the application date and a statistical analysis,
