A Race against Time

RAGLESVILLE — “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night” – an excerpt from the unofficial motto of the U.S. Postal Service. For some people, a very special kind, this creed is a way of life for their passions and pastimes. When most wouldn’t even consider the idea of being out and about on the warmest, coldest, or gloomiest of days, these distinct few press on through the elements of Mother Nature, all for the love of the sport. Some may call them crazy, but others would describe them as nothing less than dedicated.

Sixty-year-old Ed Melton for the past 10 years has been a part of the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association, which hosts the Ultra Cycling Cup Race. This is a form of bicycle racing that offers the most physically challenging endurance of an individual, and Melton’s age doesn’t keep him from going at it with everything he can muster.
