WASHINGTON —
Washington senior Paige Hawthorne fought and clawed all night, and when it was over, the Hatchets were back at .500.
The Hatchets (5-5) volleyball team defeated Bloomfield in five games (24-26, 25-18, 25-10, 17-25, 15-10) Wednesday night at the Hatchet House.
In an up and down five matches for both teams, Washington found a way to come out with the victory behind a great performance from Hawthorne.
“The girls stepped it up and really pulled together once we got it,” said Hatchets head coach Alicia Hand.
Hand said Hawthorne’s value during Wednesday night was so important to keep pushing all the players on the team, which as a senior is something she expects.
“She (Hawthorne) did a great job of picking up tips and was trying to get everything up in front of us,” Hand said. “She’s one of our team leaders and we know we can always rely on her for that communication and motivation to keep everyone pulled together.”
Hand explained that all the things Hawthorne does during each match can’t be quantified by statistics in a box score.
“One thing that some players don’t understand is that the more talking you guys do, the more confidence you have and you work more together as a team,” Hand said.
After dropping the first game of the night, Washington won the next one and appeared to take complete control with their game three win by 15 points.
Bloomfield roared back to win the fourth game, 25-17, before the Hatchets fought back to win the fifth and final game 15-10.
Washington was led by Amber Taylor’s 34 assists, Rachel Chattin with 15 kills and Araina Fidler’s 16 digs.

Now back even for the season, The Hatchets enter a big tournament at Evansville Central, needing to keep doing the things that were successful during Wednesday’s win, according to Hand.
“We need to pull together and believe in ourselves,” Hand said. “One thing that we lack at times is that we are an awesome team. We have so much potential and so much talent we just need to let it shine and show everybody what we’re capable of doing.”

Reading Street from Pearson Scott Foresman will be used for the next six years beginning in the fall. 9:33 p.m. - A male caller at 603 N.W. Second St. said his roommate shot himself in the tongue with a pellet gun. The roommate told officers he thought the gun was not loaded. Both the caller and the roommate were taken to Daviess Community Hospital.
