Vincennes — Knox County is looking for possible uses of abandoned mining buildings at a southwestern Indiana site.
The Knox County Parks and Recreation Department says no immediate plans have been made for what was once Enoco Mine offices, locker rooms and a repair shop. Parks superintendent Chase Ellis says one possibility is a mining museum dedicated to Enoco's past, along with restrooms for visitors going to the former mine, which is now a rehabilitated wetlands area.
Ellis says some former fixtures are still in the abandoned buildings, such as pulleys that miners may have used to hang up dirty work clothes at the end of the day.
The Enoco mine near Bruceville is about 50 miles north of Evansville and closed in the mid-1960s after being an active coal mine for a half century.
