WASHINGTON —
The Washington Community Schools Board met at noon Thursday for a public hearing on their proposed budget.
No patrons were on hand to comment, according to Superintendent Daniel Roach. Earlier in the week, the Daviess County Council reviewed the corporation’s budget as per state statute, but suggested no changes because the corporation was within the recommended growth quotient of 2.8 percent.
“The next step will be, at the September board meeting, the board will actually adopt the budget,” Roach said. That meeting will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 at the corporation offices.
It will then be submitted via the Gateway system to the Department of Local Government Finance. It’s their role, he said, to review the budget and make necessary changes to make certain all school corporation budgets are aligned with the tax cap.
The corporation’s advertised tax rate is $2.13, about 16 cents lower than last year’s rate, according to Roach. He said the assessed valuation is $400 million, the same rate used the last two years, and the general fund budget estimate is $16.355 million. Roach said the tax rate is typically advertised high and the assessed value is advertised low to allow for any changes the DLGF might make.
This was Roach’s first budget process at Washington Community Schools since taking the reins in July as superintendent. He said he worked with former Superintendent Bruce Hatton and Treasurer Carrie Alford.
