Washington SB passes budget

WASHINGTON — The Washington School Board passed its 2013 budget during their regular meeting on Thursday.

The budget, which moves to the state Department of Local Government Finance for approval, was advertised at $2.13 for every $100 of property value assessed, about 16 cents lower than the 2012 actual rate.

The board also heard from Superintendent Daniel Roach the start of the school year “had gone relatively well.” The state-mandated attendance taking day was last Friday, Roach said, and the student population may be higher. With more students comes more in state funding.

“I anticipate we will be up a few students,” Roach said.

Assistant Superintendent Paul White gave the board a presentation on upcoming teacher evaluations. With changes in state law, teachers are now to be evaluated at the end of every year.

The main point White stressed was communication. He said the model, called RISE, is new to both administrators and teachers and they all want to be on the same page. RISE involves classroom visits, test scores, overall school grades and a student learning objective.

White explained a student learning objective involves a teacher choosing one class, writing a set of objectives that are a little bit more than state standards and following through with them based on an end-of-course assessment.

He said most of the time spent on evaluations have been on the student learning objectives, called SLO.

“SLOs are now a very familiar term in this school corporation,” White said.

Evaluations will continue through the school year.

PERSONNEL

The board accepted the following resignations: Chris Derr, seventh grade boys basketball assistant coach; Susan Chambers, co-head teacher at Lena Dunn; Eric Gilley, eighth grade boys basketball assistant coach; and Amy Sandullo, assistant softball coach.

The following appointments were accepted: Megan Arvin, Griffith cheer coach; Steve Brothers, high school math department chairman; Cody Lee, seventh-grade assistant boys basketball coach; Tom Lee, Lena Dunn head teacher; Holly Mattingly, high school assistant cheer coach; Brett Matteson, high school assistant volleyball coach; Brenda Stallman, high school assistant girls tennis coach; Kevin Stallman, high school head girls tennis coach; Matt Riney, high school band percussion assistant; and Chad Niehaus, fifth- and sixth- grade boys basketball coach at Veale and fifth-grade boys basketball travel coach.

ENDOWMENTS

Jeannie Fields of the Daviess County Community Foundation presented the board 27 checks from various endowments the foundation holds for the schools. The total disbursements for 2012 was $18,692. Most of those funds were for scholarships.

CALENDAR CHANGES

Roach asked, and received, approval for changes to the 2012-13 school calendar. Those changes were not available as of press time.
