PLAINVILLE —
Daviess and Pike county sheriff’s deputies executed a Pike County search warrant Thursday at a Plainville home, recovering items stolen from area residents and arresting two people.
According to Lt. Det. Bill Dougherty and Det. Kevin Eaton, Pike County authorities had complaints Wednesday of a male and female in a white car stopping at homes and asking for water for their supposedly disabled car. The couple, who are married, had children with them and would ask if the children could use the bathroom or have a drink of water. While the children had the homeowners distracted, the couple would go through the house and pick up pill bottles, loose cash, jewelry, purses and other items of value.
“Yesterday they hit Otwell, Petersburg and southern Daviess County,” Dougherty said on Thursday, adding some items reported stolen Wednesday were recovered during Thursday’s execution of search warrants for the couple’s car and home.
Deputy Mark Bledsoe added items stolen from Dubois are believed to have been located, as well.
Dougherty said the man and woman, whose identities have not yet been released, hit homes in Daviess, Dubois and Pike counties “round the clock.” He said they knocked on doors at 1 a.m. and 1 p.m. and many other times in between.
Deputies said the pair apparently posed as EMTs and security company employees, and tried to sell gift cards for fund raisers. A couple pretending to collect money for vacation bible school this summer may also be this same pair, they said.
“If anyone has had a similar experience with people doing this, they should contact local law enforcement in their county,” Dougherty said.
The couple drove a white, four-door car with a loud exhaust and possibly a temporary plate. They especially targeted elderly and disabled people.
