SHOALS —
Emergency Management Director Monty Wolf asked the Martin County Commissioners at their meeting Tuesday night whether they were ready to lift the county’s burn ban. He said that several neighboring counties have lifted theirs and with the recent rainfall, he felt that it was safe to allow burning again.
“I think for now things are looking a whole lot better than they were,” he said.
He added that the counties who have lifted their ban have also said they will put it back in place if no more rain is received in the near future. He said Martin County can do the same.
He said there have been no fires in Martin County and most fires that do ever happen are because people burn leaves or trash and leave them unattended.
Gene Fromm, who was in the audience, said that he lives in Lost River Township and they haven’t received any abundance of rain.
After more discussion, the commissioners decided to leave the burn ban in place for at least the next two weeks. Commissioner Dan Gregory suggested that Wolf speak to the fire departments in the county and see how they feel about lifting the ban. The issue will be revisited at the next commissioners’ meeting.
Gregory reported that he spoke to Traveler’s Insurance Company twice yesterday regarding the damaged bridge on Deep Cut Lake Road. The company’s engineer is reviewing photos of the bridge and will contact Gregory on Friday to schedule a time to come look at the bridge if needs be.
Highway superintendent Jim Williams reported that his department is two men down. Both men were in accidents, one in a car and the other in the county’s tri-axle, and are both off work.
He also presented the commissioners with paperwork from INDOT regarding federal aid on the bridge that was damaged on the Donahue Bridge near Indian Springs due to weather.
