CITY REPORT

Thursday

9:40 p.m. – Beth Landreth, 55, reported a residential fire at 706 Front St. When police and firefighters arrived three minutes later, the structure was fully engulfed. Landreth had just returned from a hospital stay, and Sheryl Tracy, 58, was at the home with her. Landreth did not want to return to the hospital, so she was going to stay with friends.

6:24 p.m. – Harry W. Hanson, Washington, reported a lost or stolen Droid 4 cell phone.

5:27 p.m. – A female caller reported kids walking on the ice at the Eastside Park lake. An officer spoke to some juveniles who said they had only been on the edge throwing rocks in the lake. Eight minutes later, the officer saw a juvenile back out on the ice and told him to stay off.

4:17 p.m. – A female was on station to report the theft of her cell phone from a special ed classroom where she was helping out. A suspect’s name was given and officers spoke to the suspect’s mother and searched the suspect’s jacket. They were unable to locate the phone. The woman was advised to go through her service provider to try to locate the phone.

3:33 p.m. – Austin Hernandez, 900 S. Meridian St., advised he arrived home to find his door kicked in and items missing. Suspects’ names were given. An officer at the scene advised there was no sign of forced entry.

CITY ACCIDENTS

Dec. 9

6:19 p.m. — Tammy D. Baer, 51, 717 St. George Dr., was driving her 2008 Ford F250 north on Front Street and attempted to turn west onto Maxwell Avenue. She pulled into the path of Matthew D. Fox, 28, Bicknell, who was traveling south on Front Street in his 1995 Toyota Tercel.

No injuries were reported at the scene. Damage was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000. According to the accident report, Baer had been drinking and refused to take a drug/alcohol test. She was charged with failure to yield the right of way at the intersection and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Dec. 7

4:28 p.m. — Danielle F. Doezema, 33, 1608 McCormick St., was eastbound on W. Oak Street in her 2004 Ford Explorer and was unable to stop at the intersection with Maysville Road because of road surface conditions. Narda M. Santos, 27, 30 Sundale Trailer Ct., was southbound on Maysville Road, and Doezema struck the passenger side of the Santos vehicle in the intersection.

Santos had minor bleeding to her head and was treated at the scene. Damage was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000. Doezema and Santos both were cited for driving while suspended.

Dec. 4

4:20 p.m. — Shannon L. Johnson, 43, 111 Southside Ave., was westbound on Walnut Street in her 2002 Pontiac Montana, and David K. Gotwald III, 69, 1404 Brett Cable Rd., was northbound on SR 57 in his 2006 Dodge Ram. The traffic light was red for Johnson and green for Gotwald. Johnson said she applied her brakes, but they didn’t stop her vehicle. She stated she looked down to see the ABS light on and tried to brake again, but failed to stop for the traffic light and was struck by Gotwald. No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.

COUNTY REPORT

Thursday

11:36 a.m. – A caller advised a semi tried to turn off SR 58 onto Demotte Drive in Odon and was hung up with the cab in Demotte Drive and the trailer on the highway. SR 58 had to be closed for a short time while a wrecker pulled the semi out. It was reopened at 1:14 p.m.

8:29 a.m. – A semi was reported in the ditch at CRs 800N and 1100E, blocking the entire road. A wrecker pulled it out and it was on its way at 9:44 a.m.

COUNTY ACCIDENT

Dec. 22

4:31 a.m. – A silver 2000 Pontiac Grand Am registered to Sheila J. Taylor, Loogootee, was reported stolen by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. The caller advised officers were working the theft and interviewing suspects, who reported the car was in a ditch somewhere in Daviess County near Steve’s Country Market.

Daviess County Deputy Steve Sturgis went to the area and located the vehicle in a ditch at the intersection of CRs 1000E and 450N. According to the accident report, it appeared the Pontiac had been traveling south on CR 1000E and continued straight through the “T” intersection with CR 450N, where it went into the ditch, struck a culvert and became partially submerged in a stream.

A wrecker was called to remove the vehicle. Damage was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

Martin County Sheriff’s deputies were investigating the case and criminal charges were expected to be filed.

8:49 p.m. - A complainant on station turned in a pouch that contained an electronic tablet. The pouch was found at Eastside Park.

WC to graduate on Friday
Washington Catholic High School will hold its commencement exercises at 8 p.m. Friday in the gymnasium. Following the procession and invocation, Karie Craney, principal, will make introductory remarks. The salutatory addresses by Hannah Emmons and Steven Holland will follow a musical selection by the WC Ensemble. The valedictory address will then be given by Andrea Onyett. Daryl Hagan, superintendent of Catholic Schools Diocese of Evansville, and Andrew Wibbeler, dean of students, will present graduate scholarships. Bishop Charles C. Thompson, Diocese of Evansville, Daryl Hagan and Karie Craney will then present the diplomas.

High winds hit area; cause damage
Daviess County and the city of Washington were hit hard by storms that passed through the area Tuesday morning.
High winds accompanying the storms ripped through the area damaging buildings, uprooting trees and sending a 20-foot piece of wood through a car parked on the lot of Washington Chrysler Center.

WHS wins SeaPerch title
Washington’s SeaPerch teams took home gold at last Saturday’s national competitions at the IUPUI Natatorium.

The WHS NJROTC STEM team won first overall out of 100 teams competing at the national finals. The NJROTC team took first in the obstacle course and the deep water transfer portions of the competition, and received special recognition in the technical innovation.

Washington man arrested on molestation charge
A Washington man was arrested Friday for one count of child molesting. Jacob Tyler Taylor, 19, 603 E. Main St., Apt. 3, was arrested by city police for a count of Class B felony child molesting.

Lyons gets 65 years
Dressed in a bright green jumpsuit and escorted by members of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, Corey Mitchell Lyons, 23, entered the court room, and sat hunched over a table with his family sitting behind. On the other side of the room sat family members of a baby who's was life was taken too soon and the mother of Lyons’ child Savanna Johnson.

Monday
8:36 a.m. - An employee of Fast Max, 1200 E. Nat’l Hwy., reported a drive-off worth $16.09. The driver was identified via video and after contact, went back and paid for the gas. A debit card malfunction was blamed.

Washington High School Class of 1968 is planning a casual reunion to be held at 7 p.m. June 22 at Mulligan’s. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be provided.
