Friday
10:08 a.m. — Teresa Barnes, 900 S. Meridian St., reported a break-in and theft.
6:51 a.m. — Gus Ochs, 616 W. Main St., reported a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer was struck overnight. A field report was written.
Thursday
11:36 p.m. — Sheriff’s dispatch reported a utility pole had been struck at Sugarland Road, east of SR 57N, and people were without power. Cable lines also were reported down.
CITY ACCIDENTS
Tuesday
10:48 a.m. — Helen Harmon, 75, 1108 State St., was northbound on N.E. Second Street in a 2006 Buick Lucerne registered to Jerry Harmon. When she approached the stop sign at E. VanTrees Street, her foot slipped off the brake causing her to enter the intersection and collide with a 1995 Oldsmobile 98 Regency Elite driven by Richard D. Remmel, 73, 1209 Winbrook Ln.
Remmel was eastbound on E. VanTrees Street, and the collision forced both vehicles into the corner of Home Building Savings and Loan. No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
Sunday
2:55 p.m. — City police were dispatched to an accident at Bedford Road and N.E. 12th Street, where they found a 2000 Ford Explorer registered to Tim L. Cassidy, 1573W 150N, had struck a utility pole and stop sign. Terri L. Campbell, 40, 1573W 150N, was sitting outside the vehicle.
Though Campbell’s story was inconsistent, witnesses told officers Campbell had been driving, was on the wrong side of the road at one point, had struck a pole and sped away, then struck the second pole and the stop sign. A “no parking” sign also was damaged near the first pole, which had been snapped in half.
Campbell failed a field sobriety test, but a portable breath test registered 00.0 percent. She was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated/controlled substance, driving while suspended with a prior and leaving the scene of an accident.
No injuries were reported. Damage was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.

Thursday
11:06 p.m. — A caller advised she hit a deer with her minivan on U.S. 50E in the westbound lane.
9:26 a.m. — A caller advised he witnessed an attempted poaching by a male in a black or dark blue Dodge truck. The male was hanging out the window with a shotgun aimed at a deer, but when the subject saw the caller, they sped off on CR 550S toward SR 57.

Seh Reh, like many who has come to Washington as a Burmese refugee, found life in his new home daunting. The language was so intimidating that he dropped out of high school in 2010.

North Daviess still facing budget cuts
Members of the state legislature gave schools a two percent increase but North Daviess Community Schools Superintendent Robert Bell said the corporation will still get funding cuts over the next four years.

Three injured in accident
Three persons were injured Thursday afternoon when a driver ran a red light on the U.S. 50 Bypass south of Washington at SR 257.

Wrestlers for relay
The Team Todd Relay for Life team will be joining with Tri-State Wrestling to bring an event to the Old Petersburg Gym on Saturday. Doors will open at 6 p.m. with bell time at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 and children under 4 are free. All proceeds from the event go to the Daviess County Relay for Life Team Todd.

Dollar General focuses on reading
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation announced an award of $7,800 to the Washington Carnegie Public Library to support the new adult literacy program being now being offered.

Letters returned after 55 years
Fifty-five years ago Jerry Decker wrote letters back home to his sweetheart, Carol, from Camp Pendleton, California where he was based in the Marine Corps. Fifty-five years later, Jerry still had his letters from Carol. But Carol, now Jerry¹s wife of 52 years, had, well misplaced a few of hers.
