Road paving in Washington
The Indiana Department of Transportation is advising motorists to be aware of temporary lane restrictions on Bus. 50 in Washington. Beginning on or after Monday, May 20, crews will be spot paving throughout the city. Work will be accomplished one lane at a time and utilize flag persons to control traffic through the work zones. Work activities are scheduled to take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day with all paving operations anticipated to be complete by May 24. Inclement weather will cancel the work operation for the day.

2:19 p.m. - Dave Waters, 200 1/2 SE 7th St., reported that someone had broken into his storage building and broke the windows out of the vehicles stored there. Waters also said that someone had smashed in the roofs on many of the vehicles. Extra patrol was requested. -
U.S. 50 Yard Sale starts Friday
Daviess County will be participating in the 13th annual “Great U.S. 50 Yard Sale” Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is the third year Daviess County has participated.

Barr-Reeve celebrates vote, Four-Star status
Barr-Reeve Middle/High School has been named a 2011-2012 Indiana Four Star School by the Indiana Department of Education. In order for a school to be eligible for the honor, the school must be in the 25th percentile of schools in ISTEP testing results. Over 300 schools across the state received the honor. Barr-Reeve was the only Daviess County School to make the cut.

Washington Community School board will meet in executive session at 6:15 p.m. today to discuss collective bargaining. The regular session will be at 7 p.m. Items included on the agenda: student recognition; handbooks; leadership academy.

Grad rates continues to improve
Indiana’s reported high school graduation rate continues to improve, moving from 77 percent to more than 88 percent in less than a decade, but there are still significant achievement gaps marked by race and income.

Firefighters recognized
Members of the Washington Fire Department received recognition for their rescuing efforts during three fires in 2012 in front of a standing room only crowd Monday.

Mock disaster tests services
A tanker overturned near the Gwaltney Sports Complex, releasing toxic gas. The gas then sickened 11 high school students who needed immediate attention at Daviess Community Hospital.

COUNTY REPORT 4:20 p.m. — A bus driver in Montgomery advised that a red SUV was driving very fast and ran the stop arm of her school bus. The incident happened near the intersection of 9150 E. 500 N. This is in the North Daviess area.
