Hatchets downed by Owen Valley
The Owen Valley Patriots had found themselves 0- for-the-21st Century, at least as far as their match ups with the Hatchets have gone.
However, the Washington (8-9) winning streak over the Patriots (6-12), which had been 12 games, ended with a 46-44 buzzer-beater loss in the Hatchet House. -
Cougars out-bulldog Dugger
ELNORA — Lewis Nugent scored 17 of his team-high 25 points and Alex Wittmer scored a career-high 16 as Class A No. 9 North Daviess defeated Dugger, 53-45, at the Cougar Den Thursday in a Southwestern Indiana Conference basketball game.
Nugent hit two threes, a pair of field goals and 7-8 from the line in the second half despite not starting the final 16 minutes. -
Barr-Reeve beats South Knox
VINCENNES — Class A No. 1 Barr-Reeve had few problems topping Blue Chip foe South Knox, 65-29, Thursday in boys basketball.
Jonathon Gingerich scored 16 points to pace a balanced Barr-Reeve attack that witnessed 10 player score. Addison Wagler also hit double figures with 11. -
Lions lose to Orleans
LOOGOOTEE — Before the Orleans Bulldogs visit Jack Butcher Arena again, the Loogootee Lions might want to move their 3-point line back a bit.
Orleans was deadly from behind the arc as the Bulldogs came away from Loogootee with a 58-54 win in a battle of two perennial Class A powers on Thursday. -

Class A No. 2 Barr-Reeve and Loogootee make sectional debuts Friday on the Vikings’ home court after drawing first-round byes.
The Lions open Friday’s session at 6 p.m. against North Daviess. The Vikings face Class A No. 3 Vincennes Rivet.
Friday winners return at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the championship. -
Lady Cougars advance
MONTGOMERY - North Daviess didn't burn the nets in the opening game of the Class A Barr-Reeve Sectional Tuesday, but the Lady Cougar defense proved to be spot on.
Six North Daviess players scored in a balanced attack and the defense held Washington Catholic at bay, as the Cougars defeated the Cardinals, 28-19, in the sectional's opening game. -

Marshall will need his game for Tar Heels on Wednesday
Kendall Marshall has made himself fifth-ranked North Carolina's most irreplaceable player.
The sophomore point guard is second nationally in assists, averaging 9.8 per game. He's been the perfect floor leader for coach Roy Williams' fast-paced attack with his see-everything court vision and precise passing that make the fifth-ranked Tar Heels hum in transition. -
Class A sectional begins today
You won’t find many complaints when discussing the Class A Barr-Reeve girls basketball sectional at Barr-Reeve when you speak with Jim Mackey or Ron Knepp.
The respective coaches of Washington Catholic (2-19) and North Daviess (7-13) have the opportunity to open today’s sectional at 6 p.m. Class A No. 3 Vincennes Rivet (17-3) and Shoals (7-13) complete the opening round.
Loogootee (14-6) and Class A No. 2 Barr-Reeve (20-0) await winners of the first round on Friday with winners returning Saturday for the championship. - More Local Sports Headlines
