WASHINGTON —
Washington and North Daviess open first round football sectional games today. The Hatchets host Pike Central in a Class 3A game. North Daviess travels to Dugger to play Union-Dugger in a Class A affair.
Washington
The Hatchets finished their season last Friday with a 48-21 feel- good victory against North Knox at Hatchet Holow.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak, and coach Kelly Brashear believes gave his squad a lift.
“We’re definitely in a better mental shape than we’ve been in for some time,” Brashear said. “You can tell from practices. They’ve been pretty decent.”
Trey Parsons gained a school-record 378 yards on 25 carries. It was a performance that made an impression.
“He had some kids making some good blocks, but he has an ability to manage a field that very few backs in our area have,” Brashear said. “He moves laterally very well. He gained around 200 yards on just four carries.”
The win and the way his team played were equally important to the coach.
“Getting the win was very important, but just as importantly as the win was that we played better with more consistency than we have had,” Brashear said. “It seems that whatever could possibly go wrong this year has gone wrong. We haven’t had the same kids in the game much, but we’re getting better.”
Tyler Edmiston’s health is a concern for Brashear. Edmiston, the team’s starting fullback and an inside linebacker, is still struggling with an upper ankle injury.
“He’s been hurting for a long time,” Brashear said. “It really shows how tough he is. We’re not sure if he will be able to go.”
The Chargers finished 2-7, but Brashear believes they are a dangerous team coming into the Hollow.
“They have athletes and numbers on the field,” Brashear said. “The Pocket Athletic Conference they play in is very competitive. They are aggressive. They are a big concern for us.”
North Daviess
The Cougars have played at Union Dugger once this season, coming away with a 42-14 victory in the fifth game of the season.
Union Dugger was missing quarterback Sterling Langley in that affair. His return should make a difference for the host Bulldogs.
“With him there, it makes all of their other backs that much better,” North Daviess coach Scott Helms said. “Teams have to key on him, and their other skill players work with him. They had him the next week after we played them, and North Knox beat them 25-22. They just do things better offensively with him.”
Making a second trip to Dugger isn’t as much as a problem as having to play a team with a chip on its shoulder.
“I’m not sure it really matters, going there a second time,” Helms said. “I think they have a bit of an advantage by playing us a second time. In situations like this, sometimes a team can be overconfident and some teams can have a greater motive. I think it may have a greater affect on them than us.”
The Cougars dropped a 54-22 decision last week at Springs Valley. Helms said his team needs to get back to its roots.
“We need to get back to playing our style of defense,” Helms said. “We felt like we had to stop Springs Valley’s running game at the line of scrimmage. Springs Valley took us out of that.”
Helms also hopes his team returns to its offensive roots.
“Springs Valley has one of the quickest defensive fronts that we have seen,” Helms said. “We had some breakdowns in blocking.”
