Girls basketball sectionals start tonight

WASHINGTON — Class A and 3A girls basketball sectional games open this evening at Barr-Reeve and Jasper respectively.

At Jasper, Heritage Hills and Mitchell open the 3A secctional at 6:30 p.m.

Washington and Jasper follow at 8 p.m.

The winner of the first game plays Pike Central at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The winner of the Washington-Jasper game follows at 8 p.m.. against Vincennes Lincoln.

The championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Class A sectional at Barr-Reeve features top 10 teams in Vincennes Rivet and Barr-Reeve, and nonorable mention North daviess.

Shoals and Loogootee open the sectional at 6 p.m., with Barr-Reeve and North Daviess to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Vincennes Rivet then meets the winner of Tuesday¹s first game at 6 p.m.

Thursday.

Washington Catholic awaits the winner of the North Daviess-Barr-Reeve game at 7:30 p.m.

The championship is also set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Jasper and Barr-Reeve are defending champions respectively.

• Freedom win first game of summer

  Trevor Claridge went the distance to give the Washington Freedom its first win of the season in a 10-5 win over Sullivan. After Claridge surrendered one run in each of the first two innings, Washington broke out with a five-run rally in the top of the third. Sullivan crept closer at 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the inning, and Washington added two more runs to extend the lead to 7-3 and put the game out of reach.

  Thursday’s golf regional at Country Oaks Golf Club didn’t end with the results the Washington Hatchets were seeking.

  The Hatchets placed 14th in a field of 18 teams while shooting a team score of 338.

  Washington’s first doubles team of Rachel Chattin and Audra Stallman were defeated by Evansville Mater Dei’s Emily McAtee and Jenna Smith, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round of the doubles regional tournament at Bedford North Lawrence Saturday.
