MONTGOMERY —
Youth has been served most recently at the Baymont Inn and Suites Classic at Country Oaks.
Purdue sophomore Adam Schenk is the two-time defending champion of the annual event at Country Oaks. Indiana University sophomore David Mills won three years ago when both players were graduating from high school.
Both Schenk and Mills are expected to return to Country Oaks for the June 23-24 event.
The question is there anyone who can stop the duo?
Mills won the event as a senior at Evansville North High School. Schenk, who was also a senior at South Knox, and Mills had competed against each other for several years in junior and high school events.
That competition has now extended to the Big 10 where both have turned in good seasons for each state university.
Country Oaks general manager Trey Miller isn’t certain who might stand in the way of the twosome. Entries are still being taken for the tournament in its 15th season since the 1998 inaugural.
The event has featured professionals playing in the two-day event for the past seven summers, and professionals will still be playing. However, the professional field will be competiting on a one-day basis on June 22 in the annual sponsor’s tournament beginning at 10 a.m.
“We’ve had great success with the professionals playing in the two-day format, but there has been a growing concern with the increased cost of travel and expenses that a lot of the players were enduring that asking for a total of three days was becoming difficult,” Miller said. “A lot of the players had said they would prefer a one-day event for them with a payout. That was easier than a three-day commitment.”
Miller is expecting the usual full-field of professionals to play the Friday scramble that includes four amateurs with one professional.
“Last year’s professional winner Eric Frischette was never able to play in the Friday event because of business interests,” Miller said. “We encountered similar situations with other professionals. We think this will help with those concerns.”
This year’s tournament will feature five amateur flights with a high school division. High school players are not allowed to accept gift certificates from tournaments, but Miller believes several area players will compete.
“We think a lot of the high school players will play,” Miller said. “It will be much like the Washington (high school) Invitational. They’ll play from the blues, and I think it will be very attractive for those players.”
High school players must be incoming freshmen to play. High school-age players wishing to play in the championship flight may do so, although they will not be competiting for either gift certificates or in the high school flight.
As for the tournament itself, the championship flight will play from gold tees, with other flights moving forward starting with the A Flight playing from the blue tees. The D flight will be played from a mixture of present green and white tees.
“I think we have one of the strongest fields in southern Indiana, if not the state of Indiana, as far as an amateur tournament,” Miller said. “I already have a commitment from a player in the St. Louis area. People travel for it. They know how good the tournament is. How much fun the competition is with the course condition we’re in at the present.”
Baymont enters its first year as a corporate sponsor, replacing Belt Tech from the past few seasons.
“We’re very excited to have Baymont on board for this year,” Miller said. “We have certainly appreciated Belt Tech’s support in the past few years.”
Entries for the pre-flighted event are presently being taken at the club. Entries can also be taken by phone with credit card entries.
“We’re returning to the roots of the two-day amateur tournament, but still not losing the excitement of having the opportunity of professionals playing in the event with the Friday pro-am,” Miller said.
A Friday shootout featuring nine players is scheduled to begin June 22 at 5:15 p.m. Defending champion Pete Parsons is not expected to be able to participate.
