VINCENNES —
Tonight’s game between Washington and Vincennes Lincoln may not have the rankings that some recent previous battles have had, however it is just as important, and for sectional watchers, could add some clarity to the perceived balance of power in Sectional 31.
Washington has dominated Lincoln since 2005 with a 12-2 record in the regular season and sectional play.
A Washington win would also shake up the Big 8 standings, pushing, Vincennes, Jasper and Washington into a three-way tie and very possibly a tie for the conference title at the end of the year.
The Hatchets are now 8-7 and are riding a four-game winning streak.
Leading the Hatchet surge during that stretch has been Dylan Ervin, who has had four straight games scoring more than 20 points (two with 30).
“We are playing well right now and Dylan is leading the way,” said WHS coach Gene Miiller. “As a team we are playing better defense and executing.”
Junior Michael Daudy has also become a bigger part of the equation in the last few weeks.
“His scoring has been important for us, but his rebounding is also a big thing for us. He has been getting better and better.”
Miiller said he is also looking for more offense from junior Cullen Arnold.
“We want Cullen to be more aggressive offensively. We want him to look for his shot,” added Miiller.
Miiller also is pleased with the progress of sophomores, Tyler Stoll, Andy Garland, Derek Arvin and Jake Brashear, along with junior Cody Milligan.
“I think that everyone on this team is learning their roles. As we learn our roles, we have a better chance of winning.”
Lincoln comes in at 9-5, including an early season win over Sullivan. However, they also have been defeated by Bosse and Central, like Washington, along with losses to 4A Reitz, Terre Haute North and Castle.
The Alices, Miiller’s former team, have seven seniors on the roster, but perhaps even more importantly, have a ton of experience.
Lincoln is led by Jantzen Goodwin, a senior at the guard spot.
“He is a four-starter who can do it all,” said Miiller. “He is getting about 15.5 ppg and is dangerous from anywhere, drive to the basket or shoot the 3-ball.”
Guard Nick Klumpp (5-9) has missed a big part of the season and is averaging 8.8 ppg, along with 17 in his last game. Cam Claycomb (6-2) has been the one filling in for Klumpp and Miller feels he has really developed during that time.
Lincoln has a lot of size in the paint, as well. Avory Mickens is a 6-3 sophomore, and a two-year starter, who is averaging 12 ppg. Jordan Shots is a four-year starter as well, and comes in at 6-2, getting seven points and seven board. The Alices are also joined by seniors Bryce Nowaskie and 6-5 Tyler Stutzman.
Miiller said he plans to continue doing exactly what he has been doing for the last several games.
“We are going to continue to do what have been doing, we just want to do it a little better,” said Miiller.
The tip off for the varsity game will be at 8 p.m., at Vincennes Lincoln.
