VINCENNES —
The state’s oldest rivalry saw another classic battle at Alice Arena on Friday as Vincennes Lincoln claimed the Big 8 Conference title with a 63-60 overtime win against Washington.
But while Vincennes (10-5, 6-0) claimed the conference hardware, the Alices got all they wanted and more from defending champion Washington (8-8, 3-2).
The Hatchets’ Dylan Ervin led all scorers with 35 points as the Hatchets weathered an early storm to nearly knock off the Alices in regulation before falling in an extra session.
“It was a great basketball game between two good teams,” said Washington coach Gene Miiller. “I thought both teams played well. They got off to a good start, then we made a little comeback and made some runs, and actually went ahead in the fourth quarter. We just couldn’t quite finish it off.”
Janzten Goodwin scored 16 points for Vincennes, including two huge baskets in the final 3:00 of regulation to keep the Alices’ title hopes alive.
Ervin scored 14 points in the second half to put the Hatchets in a position to win before Goodwin was able to get Lincoln into overtime.
Goodwin again did the honors on the Alices’ first possession in overtime, giving Lincoln the lead for good.
Vincennes twice built four point leads in overtime only to see Ervin drill 3-pointers to keep WHS in the game.
Washington had the ball three times in the final 1:00, once down by a point and twice trailing by three points, but the Hatchets were unable to convert to take the lead or tie the game.
Cullen Arnold added 13 points for WHS, followed by 10 from Michael Daudy. Jake Brashear didn’t score but played an excellent floor game for WHS off the bench, as did Cody Milligan, who finished with two points. Avory Mickens led Vincennes with 17 points, including 11-12 from the free throw line.
It was another outstanding performance for Ervin, who, in addition to his career-high 35 points, shut down the Alices Jordan Shotts, who scored just two points in the second half after netting 10 markers in the opening half.
“He had a heckuva basketball game, not only offensively but defensively as well. He’s just been playing awfully well the last five or six ballgames for us at both ends of the floor,” Miiller said of Ervin. “He’s been a good leader for us, he’s just been playing really well.”
Though the loss eliminated the Hatchets from conference title contention, Miiller was anything but disheartened after the game.
“That’s a tough loss. The kids fought hard against a very good basketball team,” said Miiller. “We’re getting better, but I told them we’ve got to continue to get better in the last month of the season to be where we want to be.”
Washington led late in the fourth quarter after trailing 45-40 entering the final eight minutes of action. Twice the Hatchets took three point leads in the final 3:16 of regulation, the first at 52-49 on a 3-pointer from Arnold, then when Ervin hit a two with 2:1 left. But each time Goodwin had the answer, the latter on a game tying trey with 1:59 on the clock. Neither team scored in the duration of regulation to force overtime.
The Hatchets fell behind early in the first half but came back to trail by just three points at 28-25 heading into the locker room. Vincennes built a 16-7 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to back-to-back buckets from Jordan Shotts.
But Washington rebounded, going on a 12-4 run over the next nearly 7:00 to cut the lead to one at 20-19. Ervin spurred the run with 12 of his 15 first half points. WHS had a chance to take the lead into the halftime locker room but a Hatchet turnover with :05 left in the half gave Vincennes the ball.
Shotts was then fouled in the act with just .6 of a second left on the clock, and the senior center hit both charity tosses to hand Vincennes a three-point halftime lead.
Washington dropped the JV contest to Vincennes 58-41. Jarrod Purdue led the Hatchets with 13 points, followed by Zach Ramirez with nine.
Washington will host Owen Valley on Thursday.
