TERRE HAUTE —
Washington shot 390 to place sixth in the 10-team Terre Haute South Invitational Tuesday at Rea Park.
The Hatchets (18-19) were led by a round of Kayla Mercer (95). Natalya Meinhart and Haven Lunsford also scored inside 100 with rounds of 95 and 98, respectively.
Cheyenne Jones and Destiny Graber finished with 102 and 115.
“Kayla and Natalya both had solid rounds,” Washington coach Morris Petty said. “Both felt they should have scored a little better. Haven had her first sub-100, eighteen-hole, round with her first career birdie. That was exciting for her.”
Jasper was the team winner with a score of 317. Annie Getzin paced the Wildcats at 73, and also took medalist honors. McKenzie Hilsmeyer was close behind with 75.
Vincennes Rivet was second with a 340 team score. Following were: Terre Haute South, 363; Northview, 369; Terre Haute North, 380; Washington, 390; South Putnam, 414; Cloverdale, 424; Greencastle, 436; and Linton, 437.
South Knox did not have enough players to post a team score.
“This was our fourth 18-hole invitational in a week,” Washington coach Morris Petty said. “It’s been a bit overwhelming for our young first-year players, but they have hung in and improved with each match. We started the season with a 465 and we got it down to 390. That’s a 65-stroke improvement, which is very promising. We are improving as a team, and we will continue to work to lower our scores.”

Freedom win first game of summer
Trevor Claridge went the distance to give the Washington Freedom its first win of the season in a 10-5 win over Sullivan. After Claridge surrendered one run in each of the first two innings, Washington broke out with a five-run rally in the top of the third. Sullivan crept closer at 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the inning, and Washington added two more runs to extend the lead to 7-3 and put the game out of reach.

WHS season ends Thursday at Country Oaks
Thursday’s golf regional at Country Oaks Golf Club didn’t end with the results the Washington Hatchets were seeking.
The Hatchets placed 14th in a field of 18 teams while shooting a team score of 338.

WHS falls at Regional
Washington’s first doubles team of Rachel Chattin and Audra Stallman were defeated by Evansville Mater Dei’s Emily McAtee and Jenna Smith, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round of the doubles regional tournament at Bedford North Lawrence Saturday.
