WASHINGTON —
High school football begins this evening with Washington and North Daviess having similar approaches to scrimmages.
The Hatchets have been beset by a flu-like bug that has made its way through much of the team this week.
Washington coach Kelly Brashear has limited recent practice to help his team prepare for its scrimmage at Gibson Southern.
Scott Helms has not had to go through that extreme with his Cougars. Still the memory of key injuries in 2011 remain close to his mind as his team hosts North Knox.
Both coaches have one main goal in mind — get through the scrimmages healthy.
The Hatchets closed practices down Wednesday evening due to the bug. At the same time, several veterans were under the weather for more than a day, missing two practices while ill.
“We’ve had kids with strep throat issues, we’ve had a bunch of kids out with the flu, and it’s been a bunch of the older kids too,” Brashear said. “If there is a good thing, it’s that a lot of our younger guys have had quality reps in practice. We were at the point of getting diminishing returns in practice. We quarantined the place to let kids get healthy.”
“We want to make sure everyone comes out healthy,” Helms said. “We will also probably get a good indication of whick kids need to play next Friday, and what kids may be splitting time between the varsity and junior varsity.”
Brashear said Washington will try to keep it simple against the Titans, and that his approach will be similar to years past. He will also having some variation with the health issues.
“We’re trying to put playbooks in, but we’ve had a lot of kids miss practices,” Brashear said. “We want to stay as basic as we can. That’s all you really need to do. You’re looking to see who is ready to play and see who knows what they are doing.”
Helms likes the competition between the Cougars at skill positions.
“We really have less depth on the lines and more at the skill positions,” Helms said. “It’s often been a little different in years past.”
Lines always play key roles for football teams, but line play is especially important to this fall’s Cougars.
“We’re young, but I feel like if our kids can handle things up front in the scrimmage, we’re on the right track,” Helms said. “If we get movement, I’ll feel pretty good.”
Helms will also be looking at his pass rush.
“We didn’t have a very good pass rush last year, and when you don’t have that, you don’t have good coverage,” Helms said. “The scrimmage will be a chance for our kids to showcase their talents.”
The Hatchets will likely be younger than expected at Gibson Southern.
“I guess we may play some younger kids because they are the ones getting the reps,” Brashear said. “But, I think we’ll be healthy by the time we get ready to play Boonville. If there is anything good in this, it’s that we’re getting to see some of the younger guys in game situations.”
