ELNORA —
North Daviess junior Brayden Lawyer just needed to get over the nervousness of his first singles match and it was smooth sailing after that.
The North Daviess boys tennis team started their season off with a victory Monday evening against Edgewood High School.
After splitting the first four matches, Lawyer’s win against Edgewood’s Mitch Williamson gave the Cougars the victory 3-2. After playing tennis for the first time last year as a sophomore in doubles, Lawyer moved to singles this year and he hopes this can be a launching off point for the rest of the season.
“It was just first match jitters,” said Lawyer, who dispatched Williamson in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-4). “This was my first match moving to singles and I just had to get into my rhythm.”
Head coach Brock Higgins was pleased with the season opening effort after losing seniors Lewis Nugent and Connor Wikle from last year’s team.
“I was very pleased that we were able to pull out a win, when you have younger guys it’s tough to persevere in three set matches and sometimes you have to take your lumps before you can overcome and climb to the top of the hill. and get some wins,” Higgins said.
After splitting one and two doubles, Higgins was happy to see balance from his team in getting victories from the two and three singles positions from Scott Woodruff and Lawyer.
“I love it that we’re getting wins from different positions, if you can only get wins at your singles spots you are limiting yourself to only three spots where you can get wins,” Higgins said. “That’s big for us.”
