WASHINGTON —
Girl’s golf season is right around the corner and Morris Petty believes his team has what it takes to make a run in the state tournament.
Petty, the girl’s golf coach at Washington High School has two returning players from last year’s squad that lost in sectional’s and a surprisingly improving incoming freshman that gives him hope that this team can advance beyond the 2011 finish.
“I think we’ve got a very good chance to advance in the state tournament, we play in the North Knox Sectional and there’s a couple of fairly strong teams, but by sectional time I think we’ll definitely be in the mix,” Petty said.
While Petty is focused on filling in spots on his roster, North Daviess coach Brett Melton is figuring out how to fill the enormous shoes left by departing senior Darrah Holder.
Holder was the medalist with the low score for the tournament in six of the 12 invitationals that the Cougars competed in last season and she advanced past the sectional in individual play for the second year in a row.
“You’re not going to replace Darrah, you just can’t,” Melton said. “The thing that I will ask is for all the girl’s to step up a little bit and as a team we should be able to fill that void somewhat.”
As North Daviess embarks on life without Holder, Melton said he will look to 2011 All-Conference performers Cassie Knepp and Maggie Swartzentruber as well as Meghan Knepp and lone returning senior Kirsten Madsen to pick up the slack for the Cougars. Melton said as the team readies for the beginning of the 2012 campaign next week, his expectations will be the same as every year, get through the sectional and win the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference.
Petty said in addition to the leadership from his two returning players, senior Kayla Mercer and sophomore Natalya Meinhart, the quick progression of incoming freshman Haven Lunsford will be the key to how much success the Hatchets have this season.
“She’s (Lunsford) picked up the game quickly and she’s very athletic,” Petty said.
“With Haven right now we feel we have three real solid players to start the season with.”
