Hatchets score 17 at Mt. Vernon

Local Wrap-up for Thursday

MOUNT VERNON — Austin Ghirardelli, Cullen Arnold, Austin Bush and Francisco Rodriguez scored three goals each as Washington defeated Mount Vernon, 17-0, in a Big Eight Conference boys soccer match Tuesday.

The Hatchets (2-1-2, 2-1-0 Big Eight) scored nine times in the opening half and eight in the second.

Derek Gress had two counters, while Carson Smith, Wilber Hernandez and Wilfo Serrano scored one goal each.

Blaine Arney and Bush had three assists each. Hernandez and Rodriguez had two apiece. Alex Ruiz, Cory Miller, Raymond, and Serrano had one each.

The Hatchets scored 17 goals on 35 shots. Nick Gray and Brooks Brown combined to stop seven Mt. Vernon shots in the shutout.

Washington nets Pike Central

PETERSBURG — Washington defeated Pike Central, 4-1, in tennis Tuesday.

For Washington, Lucas Miller defeated Jeffrey Estey in straight 0-0 sets. Cory Thompson defeated Dexter Waltz, 6-1, 6-4.

Washington won both doubles, as Matthew Pancake-Tyler Stoll topped Kyle Keepes-Chris Downey, 6-2, 6-0, and Jonathon Harner-Jacob Luttrell defeated Ty Smith-Tanner McFarland, 6-1, 6-2.

Pike Central’s Aaron Keepes defeated Washington’s Garrett Burton, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in singles.

“We got off to a quick start on most courts and was able to hold serve and control our offense,” Washington coach Jason Johnston said. “The team played aggressive during Pike Central’s service games. Pike is now in the Vincennes Sectional, so this was a good win for us.”

Hatchets defeat Jugrox

SHOALS — Washington improved to 4-3 with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-14 volleyball win Tuesday.

Paige Hawthorne had 16 kills, seven digs and four aces for Washington. Rachel Chattin added 15 kills and eight digs, Jordan Carr  16 assists, Amber Taylor 16 assists, Araina Fidler, eight digs and Megan Arnold four blocks.

Shakamak earns Birdcage win

Washington Catholic dropped a 25-14, 25-11, 25-17 decision to Shakamak at the Birdcage Monday.

Mary Ann Wichman had  nine points and seven digs for the Cardinals. Elizabeth Brochin recorded seven points with three aces.

Sarah Wichman had three assists and two points,  Cheyanne Stone four blocks, Sarah Wild three digs and Hannah Wild a kill and dig.

Washington Catholic won the junior varsity match, 25-23, 25-2.

Barr-Reeve wins sixth match

BEDFORD — Host Bedford North Lawrence took Class A No. 3 Barr-Reeve to four sets before the Vikings won their sixth volleyball match this season without a loss, 27-25, 18-25, 26-24, 26-24, Tuesday.

Hania Sisco had 20 digs for the Vikings. Jenna Knepp added 28 assists and 10 digs.

Tiara Kenney had 16 kills and 12 digs, Hannah Bullock had 20 digs and 15 kills, Cori Cummings 18 assists, Tanisha Graber 16 digs and 13 service points and  Allison Hoover 11 points.

Bedford North Lawrence won the junior varsity match, 25-21, 25-23.

Southridge beats tennis Vikings

HUNTINGBURG — Southridge defeated Barr-Reeve, 4-1, in tennis Tuesday.

John Cangelosi won his singles match in 6-4, 6-2, for Barr-Reeve’s point.

Jeff Parsons lost 6-0, 6-0, and Tyler Bennett was defeated 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

In doubles, Wyatt Helms-Clay Cummings lost 6-3, 6-0, and Colten Lottes-Zach Graber were defeated, 6-1, 6-4.

In reserve matches, Zack Tanksley won 8-1. Blake hoover was defeated, 8-4.

Sam Craney-Max Craney split two sets, 4-8, 8-0, and Seth Graber-Gage Miller lost, 8-0.

Jeeps blank Cougars

DUBOIS — Northeast Dubois defeated North Daviess, 5-0, in a Tuesday tennis match.

Tyler Haas defeated Evan Hawk, 6-1, 6-0, Gage Kniess topped Scott Woodruff, 6-2, 6-1 and Cayden Knies won against Braden Lawyer, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, William Schepers-Tristan Linne won against Lane Heshelman-Trevor Wikle, 7-6 (5), 6-4, and Ethan Kieffner-Patrick Betz defeated Lane Fulton-Trent Bowman in straight 6-0 sets.

Lions stop  Raiders

HUNTINGBURG — Class A No. 1 Loogootee defeated Southridge in volleyball Tuesday, 25-14, 25-16, 25-19.

Demi Richardson recorded 32 assists and nine service points for the Lions (7-2). Lauren Bowling had 18 digs and Michala Beasley 16 kills.

Waylee Wagoner had 15 points, Christina Ziegler 11 kills, Kaylee Robbins nine digs and Abby Ackerman five kills.

Loogootee gets best of Shoals

LOOGOOTEE — Zach Wagler and Ariel Jones won individual races and the Lions topped Shoals, 21-40, on the boys side in a pair of Tuesday cross country races.

Wagler won the boys event in a time of 17:22 as the Lions won the boys race, 21-40.

Other Loogootee finishers were: Liam Hollihan, third, 19:48; Mac Osborne, fourth, 20:43; Wes Whitman, sixth, 21:38; Adam Lark, seventh, 21:42; David Donnersberger, eighth, 22:08; Chase Wilcoxen, ninth, 22:37; and Matt Weitkamp, 10th, 22:59.

Jones won the girls race in 29:29. Neither team had enough runners to score as a team.

Boys soccer is unbeaten

Jaime Rojas scored two goals, including the game-winner, as Washington defeated Jasper, 3-2, Tuesday in junior high soccer.

Rojas scored his second goal for the 3-0 Hatchets after Jasper had rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

Luis Perez scored the match’s first goal before Rojas added his first for a 2-0 Washington lead.

Rojas then scored his game-winner with 27 seconds remaining on an assist by Perez.

Chargers stop Hatchets twice

Washington dropped a pair of volleyball matches to Pike Central.

The Chargers won the eighth grade match, in straight 25-11 sets. Pike Central won the B match, 25-18.

The seventh grade match went to Pike Central, 17-25, 25-22, 15-13. Washington won the B match, 30-12.

Tennis team tops Pike Central

Washington’s junior high tennis team defeated Pike Central, 4-1, Tuesday.

Winning matches for Washington were: Jake Wilson, 8-7; John Rook, 8-4; Kaleb Knepp, 8-2; and Ben Lambert-Jacob Overton, 8-0.

Hunter Escalera-Caleb Arthur were defeated, 8-4.

Nate Napier-Jacob Rice won sets, 6-1, 6-2 and lost one set, 6-2.

Hatchet runners  are 2nd, 3rd

BICKNELL — Emily Matthews placed second and Jamal Robinson third in a pair of junior high cross country meets at North Knox Tuesday.

Matthews ran in a time of 13:51 for Washington, which didn’t have enough runners to post a team score.

Maya Gray was 13th in 16:17, Mallory Heller was 20th in 18:56 and Mykah Myers was 22nd in 19:22.

Robinson ran in a time of 12:36 to pace Washington to a second place finish in the triangular boys meet.

Pike Central scored 18 points, Washington 38 and North Knox 65.

Other Washington finishers included: Curtis Tucker, third, 13:15; Shown Greene, eighth, 13:28; Wes Edwards, ninth, 13:29; Brady Turner, 11th, 13:50; Bradley Decker, 15th, 14:32; Brandon Richter, 19th, 15:53; and Kory Pfender, 25th, 17:53.

Graber wins girls race at Dubois

DUBOIS — Natalie Graber took individual honors as Barr-Reeve placed second to Jasper in an 11-team girls junior high cross country meet Tuesday.

Graber won the event in a time of 12:16. Other Barr-Reeve finishers were: Emily Schultheis, eighth, 13:17; Racheal Wilson, 10th, 13:36; Mary Lang, 17th, 14:02; Makayla Kavanaugh, 32nd, 14:46; Alexis Bauer, 48th, 15:21; Mariah Perkins, 56th, 15:34; Katie Wagler, 58th, 15:40; Kaelyn Klopfenstein, 84th, Brooke Kavanaugh, 100th, 18:13.

The Vikings (11-1) and Wildcats each scored 68 points, but the Wildcats won with better team finishes. Completing the field were: Forest Park, 87; South Knox, 95; Vincennes Clark, 97; Perry Central, 180; Tell City, 302; Northeast Dubois, 304; Southridge, 330; Heritage Hills, 530; and Washington Catholic, 640.

Loogootee and Crawford County did not have enough runners to post a team score.

Jeeps clip Vikings, 3-2

MONTGOMERY — Northeast Dubois defeated Barr-Reeve, 3-2, in tennis Tuesday.

Kolten Graber won in singles, 8-1. Mitchell Wagler-Johnny Walker won in doubles, 8-1.

Trent Graber was defeated 8-3 and Trevor Lengacher lost, 8-2.

Noah Ross, Luke Miller and Kameron Graber won exhibition matches for the Vikings.

Loogootee’s Bauer wins race

VINCENNES — Loogootee’s Andrea Bauer was the overall female winner in Saturday’s Generations Area 13 Agency on Aging 5K run.

Bauer ran in a time of 21:58.

Other area winners were: Walter Henrichsen, Loogootee, males 30-39, 19:48; and Paul Truelove, Loogootee, males 60-69, 23:43.

Second places went to: Samuel Strange, Loogootee, males 60-69, 25:15; and Carol Decker, Washington, 60-69 females, 39:26.

The race on the campus of Vincennes University attracted 116 runners.

Players sought for 12U Shock

The Southern Shock 12U fast pitch softball team is looking to finalize its roster for the 2012 fall and 2013 summer schedule.

Interested persons should contact Dustin Traylor at 812-789-6549 to schedule a tryout.

 

Soccer dinner after parade

The Lady Hatchet Soccer Spaghetti Dinner is Sept. 7 at the North Elementary School cafeteria following the football homecoming parade until 7:30 p.m.

The meal includes spaghetti, bread sticks, dessert and a drink.

Carry out is available. All members of the girls teams has tickets for sale.

The cost is $5 per person. For tickets call Mary Clifton at 259-5051.

    In singles, Cari Jo Wilson, Brytni Bray and Nicole Woodruff were defeated, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively.
    Caitlin Chestnut-Michael Sprinkle were also defeated at second doubles in straight 6-2 sets.
