WASHINGTON —
Evansville Bosse came to town looking to make Hatchet Hollow its own dog pound away from home on Friday. And thanks to a very hospitable host, the Bulldogs felt right at home on the road.
Washington committed seven first half turnovers in dropping its second consecutive home game to open the 2012 season, this time to Bosse 25-19.
After falling to Boonville last week, Washington (0-2) found the going just as tough against Bosse (1-1). But once again, the Hatchets were their own worst enemy.
A trio of lost fumbles, two interceptions, a muffed punt, and a failed conversion attempt on fourth down - all in the first half - helped keep the Hatchets out of the end zone for the first six quarters of the season stretching back to last week’s 20-3 loss to Boonville.
A furious fourth quarter comeback after WHS trailed 12-0 at the half got WHS back in the ballgame. But the strong finish left Washington coach Kelly Brashear wondering what might have been had his squad played better in the first half the last two weeks.
“We did make it interesting. If we would come out and play in the first half the way we did in the second half tonight, if we had played that way last week against Boonville, we might be 2-0 instead of 0-2,” said Brashear. “As a head coach, I feel that’s where we should be. But we’re not because we keep killing ourselves with mistakes.”
For the second straight week, Washington was its own worst enemy on offense thanks to turnovers. Washington broke the plain of the goal line for the first time this season when Jake Brashear’s 1-yard quarterback sneak capped a 13-play, 71-yard drive late in the third quarter. Brashear’s run answered another touchdown run by Bosse’s Carrington Crutcher earlier in the quarter, though a botched extra point attempt still left WHS trailing 19-6 entering the fourth quarter.
But Crutcher, who finished with 267 yards on 28 carries had the comeback, scored on a 58-yard run on Bosse’s next play from scrimmage, staking the Bulldogs to a 25-6 lead with under 2:00 left in the quarter.
Washington’s offense did show signs of life in the second half. Kane Waggoner led WHS with 131 yards on 20 carries, mostly after halftime as the Hatchet backfield held onto the ball long enough to take advantage of the holes opened up by WHS offensive line. Waggoner reached pay dirt with a four-yard run in the fourth quarter. Touchdown runs by Waggoner (four yards) and Tyler Edmiston (three yards) brought WHS back to within striking distance at 25-19 with just over 4:00 left in the contest. But Bosse was able to run out most of the remaining time on the clock on its next possession to preserve the win.
Edmiston added 62 yards on 12 carries as the Hatchets finished with 246 yards on the ground. Kyle Pfender added a 52-yard kickoff return in the first half for WHS. Defensive highlights included an interception of Bosse quarterback Bo Burkhart by Hunter Potts in the first half and a fumble recovery by the Hatchets’ Eli Betancourt in the second half.
Bosse led 12-0 at the half thanks to a 25-yard pass from quarterback Bo Burkhart to C.J Howard on Bosse’s first drive of the game - a drive that started at the WHS 36 thanks to a Hatchet fumble - and an 80-yard touchdown run by Carrington Crutcher on the Bulldog’s second possession of the game.
As the Hatchets return to Big 8 Conference action next week at Princeton, Brashear took heart in the second half comeback that came up just short as a harbinger of good things to come.
“I told the kids after the game, I’m really pleased about one thing and one thing only, and that’s the fire we showed in the second half,” said Brashear. “As bad we played offensively most of the night, we still gave ourselves a chance to win the football game. It just didn’t work out that way.”
