Hatchets clip Tigers in 5
PRINCETON — Washington and Princeton split the first four volleyball sets before the Hatchets won the fifth Thursday in Washington’s Big Eight Conference opener.
Washington (3-2, 1-0) won 25-23, 15-25, 25-16, 16-25 and 15-5.
Rachel Chattin had 15 kills and Paige Hawthorne added 15 digs. Amber Taylor had 16 assists, Chattin and Amber Taylor contributed four aces each.
Megan Arnold had five blocks and Emily Sullender four.
Hatchets defeat Lions in tennis
Washington won the singles and Loogootee the doubles as the Hatchets earned a 3-2 tennis decision Thursday at Lena Dunn Elementary.
Lucas Miller topped Conner Wittmer, 6-2, 6-4 and Cory Thompson defeated Jesse Horney, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Garrett Burton defeated Tylan Norris, 6-0, 6-2.
Waylon Matthews-Gabe Nolley defeated Matthew Pancake-Tyler Stoll, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, and Tyler Booker-Will Nonte topped Jonathon Harner-Jacob Luttrell, 7-5, 6-4.
“Lucas and Garrett were able to win the first two points for us in straight sets,” Washington coach Jason Johnston said. “Overall good job, but we have some things to focus on during the next couple of practices.”
“Our doubles have been our mainstays, so we were counting on points there,” Loogootee coach Rick Graves said. “We were trying to sneak out a win somewhere in our singles. To Washington’s credit, they were a little better in the singles. This was a good, close, competitive match determined by a few points.”
Reserve match winners for Washington included: Michael Ramsey, 6-3; Jaydon Barley, 7-5; and Clay Walker-Nick Fisher, 6-1.
Reserve match winners for Loogootee included: Landon Diamond, 6-1 and 6-4; Hayden Bell-Jayce Wagoner, 6-3 and 6-3; and Jordan Berry-Caleb Dant, 6-1.
Washington Catholic splits
Washington Catholic remained unbeaten in boys soccer while the girls team suffered its first loss at Rees Field Thursday in a pair of Blue Chip Conference soccer matches against Northeast Dubois.
Colton Reed scored twice for the boys (4-0, 2-0 Blue Chip) and added an assist. Blaine Fuhs scored once with two assists.
Brantly Smith scored and Brody Wilson had an assist.
Washington Catholic dropped to 3-1, 1-1 Blue Chip as Northeast Dubois pitched a 1-0 shutout.
North Daviess tops Lakers
SHAKAMAK — North Daviess remained unbeaten with a 25-26, 25-14, 25-12 against Shakamak Thursday.
Lexi Brewer had 22 digs for the 4-0 Cougars. Madison Reed had 21 assists and two aces, Lenzi Brewer 10 assists, six aces and five digs, Taylor Jeffers 12 kills and two aces, Larynda Keith 12 digs, Jessica Miller six kills and two blocks, Chandra Bruner five kills and a block and Morgan Wadsworth five kills and a block.
“We played well,” North Daviess coach Rebecca Hays said. “The girls were efficient and didn’t make a lot of unforced errors.”
The Cougars also won the junior varsity match, 25-18, 25-19.
Washington tops Cougars
VINCENNES — Washington defeated North Daviess, 204-220, Thursday in golf at The Country Club of Old Vincennes.
Kayla Mercer and Natalya Meinhart led Washington with 48 each. Cheyenne Jones shot 51, Haven Lunsford 57, Jonna Williams 58, Destiny Graber 60 and Liz Sievers 63.
“After playing pretty well against Jasper Wednesday, we played poorly,” Washington coach Morris Petty said. “We need to improve our performance on this sectional course if we have hope of advancing.”
Miners dig win in 3
LINTON — Linton defeated Washington Catholic in three volleyball sets Thursday, 25-14, 25-8, 25-10.
Sarah Wichman had six assists and two service points for the Cardinals (0-5). Sarah Wild had seven digs and three points, Mary Ann Wichman added six digs and three points, Hannah Wild three digs and two blocks, Cheyenne Stone four points, Elizabeth Brochin three points and two digs, Rachel May one block and Bailey Abel one dig.
Linton also won the junior varsity match, 23-25, 25-15, 25-7.
The Cardinals host Shakamak Monday after playing its first five matches away.
Barr-Reeve still unbeaten
MONTGOMERY — Both Barr-Reeve junior high volleyball teams remained undefeated with wins against North Knox Thursday.
Peyton Lengacher had 16 service points as the eighth graders (2-0) defeated the Warriors, 25-11, 25-2.
Tyanna Graber led the seventh graders (2-0) to a 25-14, 25-3 win with 18 points.
Soccer dinner after parade
The Lady Hatchet Soccer Spaghetti Dinner is Sept. 7 at the North Elementary School cafeteria following the football homecoming parade until 7:30 p.m.
The meal includes spaghetti, bread sticks, dessert and a drink.
Carry out is available. All members of the girls teams has tickets for sale.

Cougars plan fall basketball
ELNORA — Registration for the sixth annual North Daviess girls basketball fall league is from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, and from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, in the high school library.
The league is for girls in the North Daviess School Corporation in grades three through six.
The league is split into two separate age groups, and games are scheduled for each night.
A full schedule will be distributed during registration periods. The cost is $10 per player. T-shirts are included.
Tournament at Bicknell
BICKNELL — The Bicknell Labor Day Softball Tournament is Sept. 3. No double wall or composite bats are allowed.
A one-and-one count will be used. Cost is $150.
