WC lights up Lighthouse

WASHINGTON — After a quick start to the first half, the Washington Catholic boys soccer team went into halftime up 1-0 before head coach Wayne Neace made some much needed adjustments for the second half.

Behind a hat trick from senior Colton Reed and two goals from sophomore Matt Fisher, the Cardinals defeated Lighthouse Christian, 8-0, Monday at Rees Field.

The Cardinals (5-0-1) got on the board early after senior Brantly Smith scored less than four minutes into the first half. The Cardinals were held scoreless the rest of the half, and Neace, dissatisfied with their play made some changes to the lineup.

“In the first half we didn’t play well, so I moved some players into defensive positions to where they didn’t get to do the things they wanted to do,” Neace said. “We came out on fire. They had to play the way the coaching staff wanted them to play and we told the captains to step up and be leaders and they did it.”

Nik Daci and Blaine Fuhs scored to stretch the lead to 3-0 with 21 minutes to play, before Reed put the game completely out of reach. With just under 16 minutes remaining, Reed scored his first goal and 3:47 later he had a hat trick for a 6-0 advantage. Neace said Reed’s outburst is the high level of play that he expects from the senior.

“I think Colton’s the best player on the field no matter where we play and Brantly Smith is right up there too,” Neace said. “If we can get those guys playing together and playing the way we want them to play, they can be unstoppable. If they do that we got a bright future the rest of the year.”

Despite the dominating 8-0 win, Neace said his team still needs to learn how to stay focused.

“Like the game we tied Saturday against South Knox (a 2-2 tie), we actually had a 2-0 lead on them and then we settled down,” Neace said. “The other day we scored against Northeast Dubois maybe 30 seconds into the game and then we slowed down the rest of the half. With this team we are learning to just put away a team, because we can’t just slow down. We need to get the killer instinct that we had last year. We scored 98 goals in the regular season last year, we are far from that this year.”

Neace explained that developing a killer instinct starts at the top and trickles down to the rest of the team.

“We just need our captains to step up and I think our players will follow them,” Neace said. “If they come out and dominate games and play hard all the time no matter what the score is, everybody will follow.”
