Loogootee win clinches Blue Chip title

LOOGOOTEE — Loogootee won the boys Blue Chip Conference basketball championship Friday at Jack Butcher Arena, but it was anything but easy.

The Lions ended the regular season with an 8-0 slate in the Blue Chip with a

50-37 win against visiting North Knox. And while the 13-point victory appeared to be reasonably simple, the Warriors stayed with the Lions through most of the game until the final four minutes.

The victory gave the Lions (16-5) their second conference championship in the past three years ( Loogootee last won with a 7-1 record in 2011) and the third since 2005 when the Lions finished 8-1.

The victory also provided the opportunity for Conner Wittmer to move into the seventh position for career scoring at Loogootee.

Wittmer moved into seventh with a basket early in the fourth quarter to pass Jeff Bledsoe who finished his Loogootee career with 1.186 points in 1995.

Wittmer finished with 14 points and stands with 1,192.

Loogootee opened the game with an 11-2 lead over cool shooting North Knox (8-14, 3-5 Blue Chip). But the Warriors got the final four points of the quarter to cut the gap to 11-6.

Warrior Jordan Meurer hadn¹t warmed to his game-high 21 points as the Lions led 19-12 in the second quarter, and finished the half leading 22-17.

Neither team shot particularly well in the opening half, with Loogootee making 9-26 and North Knox 7-25 from the field.

Meurer, who finished the first half with seven points, cut Loogootee¹s lead to 22-19 early in the third quarter, and the Warriors stayed within a two-to-four-point range before the Lions were able to open a 35-29 lead to end the third.

Darian Stewart had given the Lions a 35-27 lead before Meurer made two free throws at the end of the quarter.

Wittmer got the basket to propel into the seventh spot in career scoring early in the fourth quarter for a 37-29 lead, but the Warriors were not yet done.

Meurer made consecutive baskets to cut the gap back to 37-35, but that was as close as North Knox would come.

Loogootee scored the next four points and then added the final nine for the victory.

Wittmer ended leading the Lions with 14 points and Cam Wagler scored 11 points with eight rebounds.

Loogootee ended 19-49 from the field, while North Knox managed 14-48.

Loogootee held a 32-24 edge on the boards.

Freedom win first game of summer
Trevor Claridge went the distance to give the Washington Freedom its first win of the season in a 10-5 win over Sullivan. After Claridge surrendered one run in each of the first two innings, Washington broke out with a five-run rally in the top of the third. Sullivan crept closer at 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the inning, and Washington added two more runs to extend the lead to 7-3 and put the game out of reach.
