WASHINGTON —
The Washington Catholic volleyball team took for the court for the seventh time this season, and for the seventh time they failed to register a victory.
The North Knox Lady Warriors defeated the Lady Cardinals in three consecutive matches 25-15, 25-9 and 25-19 Tuesday evening at the Birdcage.
In the first game, Washington Catholic (0-7) fell behind 11-5, before cutting the North Knox lead to 13-11, but that was as close as they would get all night.
In game two, the Warriors completely dominated, cruising to a 25-9 victory. In the third matchup, the Cardinals battled throughout, but couldn’t get over the hump.
Head coach Keith Wild said despite the loss he feels his team is improving even on a night when they matched up against what he called a better team.
“We’ve been improving every game, this team is definitely a better team than us, but we’re trying to stress defense,” Wild said.
“I thought we played decent defense considering they have some pretty big hitters.”
As the Cardinals continue their season, Wild said a point of emphasis has been staying up for every game and staying positive.
“Most definitely it gets harder, we had a tough game last night and we had a few girls get down,” Wild said.
“We had a meeting today that seemed to help them and hopefully it helps them for the rest of the season. I told them I don’t care if we go 0- for the season as long as we are improving, because the competition around this area is pretty tough right now.”
Wild said he thought his team displayed great intensity and communication all night, which he has stressed all season and he expects that continue as the Cardinals search for their first win.
“I think as a team as whole played well. I thought Mary Anne Wichman made a good effort tonight, but I think overall, as a team,we did well tonight,” Wild said.
While Wild conceeded that getting the first win this season will be an uphill climb after an 0-7 start, but he feels his group has what it takes to get a couple of wins by the end of the season.
“I think there are a couple of teams that we can get by, but we’ve got to put three or more games together,” Wild said.
“We have to be there in the end of a set. We always struggle at the end of a set, we’ve always been there and we struggle once we get to the end of a set.”
