MONTGOMERY —
MONTGOMERY — The Barr-Reeve Lady Vikings remained perfect on the 2011-2012 season and brought an end to four years of sectional dominance by Vincennes Rivet, as the defending Class A state champions were eliminated 53-49 in sectional semifinal action on Kavanaugh Kourt at Barr-Reeve on Friday.
After eight straight losses to third-ranked Rivet (18-4), it was the second consecutive win for second-ranked Barr-Reeve (21-0) over the Lady Patriots after the Lady Vikings prevailed in the regular season matchup between the two teams at Rivet less than a month ago. After holding a double-digit lead for much of the second half, the Lady Vikings had to withstand a late Rivet comeback in order to advance to tonight’s championship game against North Daviess.
“We played Barr-Reeve basketball. Whenever you get that kind of lead, whether or not you decide to get off the gas pedal, if you decide to do that, you have to make the layups and the free throws,” said Holt, whose team held as much as a 16-point lead in third quarter before Rivet was able to get it down to three points late in the game. “We left a few points out there, we left the door open. Rivet, the championship club that they are, they came back. A big tip of the cap to Rivet, they’re a great program with great players and great coaches, tonight we were just a little better.”
Barr-Reeve generated much of its offense from its defense, which forced 20 Rivet turnovers. The main thief on those steals — Barr-Reeve senior forward Tya Harmon — often turned those steals into lay ups at the other end. And fittingly, it was Harmon, a senior who has suffered greatly at the hands of Rivet during her career, who hit 3-4 free throws in the final :23 to seal the Lady Patriots’ fate and end four years of Rivet cutting down the sectional nets.
“This being my senior year, Rivet has knocked us off all three of the previous years. We knew we were going to have come out strong this year and take care of it,” said Harmon. “I think we did that.”
Harmon led the Lady Vikings with 24 points, but the senior guard had plenty of help. Kayti Taylor hit three huge first half 3-pointers to help stake B-R to a 12-point halftime lead. Taylor finished with nine points, while Jenna Knepp added 12 points. Cori Cummings hit a big trey in the third quarter and knocked down three charity tosses in the fourth quarter to help thwart the Rivet comeback bid.
Senior guard Lindsey Graber scored just two points but ran the Barr-Reeve offense exceedingly well — the Lady Vikes committed just nine turnovers -— despite playing much of the first half with two fouls. Hope Alford and Haley Taylor also provided solid bench play in the first half in a total team effort for Barr-Reeve.
“We didn’t sub in the second half, we thought we were fresher and could withstand that,” said Holt. “But we got good contributions from Haley Taylor and Hope Alford in that first half. Sometimes Tya, Lindsey, and Jenna get all the headlines, but there was a big dose of Kayti Taylor tonight, there was a big dose of Cori Cummings tonight to help us get over the hump.”
Bailey Dreiman topped Rivet with 16 points, followed by 15 from Ellie Herman and 13 from Allyson Wehrheim.
The first half was close until late in the second quarter when Barr-Reeve took control. A 10-0 Lady Viking run — including seven straight points by Harmon — sent Barr-Reeve sailing into the locker room with a 31-19 halftime lead.
Harmon scored 15 in the opening half, while Knepp added five.
